When the iPod was first released, most viewed it as a personal music player for traveling, working out, or other "individual" activities. But that all changed when people started storing their entire music collections on their iPods and doing away with CDs entirely. Among the many product categories that emerged in the aftermath was the iPod-specific speaker system, which lets you listen to your entire iTunes library out loud but without sacrificing portability. The jWin I177BLK is the latest incarnation--a user-friendly, compact speaker system that looks somewhat like a clock radio (and functions like one, too), but stands ready to deliver deep, rich audio playback.

The powered system is outfitted with a dock on the top surface that holds many iPod models. The dock not only grips the iPod in an easy-to-access location, making it a breeze to find specific songs or hit shuffle, but it also charges the iPod while in use. As a result, you can remove the iPod from the dock right before working out and it'll still be fully charged, even after playing through the speakers for an entire afternoon. Even better, the I177BLK isn't restricted to the iPod, as it also connects to other USB-equipped personal MP3 players. Households with several personal music players won't be left out of the playback loop.

The system's audio performance is warmly satisfying thanks to jWin's Aura acoustic technology, which adds depth and clarity to the music reproduction. And even though the system is built for digital music files, it also includes a built-in clock, a dual alarm function, and an AM/FM _radio with PLL digital tuning technology. The radio makes the unit ideal for bedrooms, offices, and other locations where an alarm comes in handy. Listeners even have their choice of waking to the iPod, the radio, or a buzzer.

Additional features include a user-friendly backlit LCD screen, a precision volume control that ensures a comfortable sound level, a remote control for maximum convenience, and an external loop antenna that improves the AM reception. The I177BLK, which comes in a sleek black housing that measures 11.25 by 3.12 by 6.75 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

 "poor design as a clock" 2009-10-02
By choosymom
I got this product to replace our alarm clock and double as a docking station for the 3G ipod touch I just bought my husband. The music-related features were fine (docking, charging, speaker quality, sleep mode, etc) but its a crappy clock design that doubles as a very bright night light.

The numerals are gray on a gray background...difficult to read at night. And yet the background is lit very brightly, even on the dimmest of three settings. My 8yo who sleeps with a very bright night light loved that mom and dad's room was "all lit up." Me, not so much. I had to turn the light off completely to sleep and thus you can't see what time it is at all if you wake up in the night. If that's not enough...it also hums periodically and the buzzer tone sounds like a fire alarm, so I can't imagine anyone would want to wake up to that instead of music.

It's going back. Bah.

 "not a bad product" 2009-09-17
By lady meko
i bought it because for the most part the reviews all said that the alarm was loud. and it is for the most part.the buzzer is more like a tornado siren and yet i am still managing to sleep through it because some how when i hit snooze its turning the alarm off. maybe when they redesign it they can fix the issue and have the snooze go until you turn the alarm buttons off like all other clocks

other than that i am pleased with the product

 "Exactly as expected..." 2009-09-12
By M. Bellin (Woodbury, MN United States)
I was looking for an ipod station, a radio, and preferably a clock, so this was a perfect solution. It's very easy to use, and I like the dimmest setting of the clock. The speakers can be cranked pretty high, and although they don't give you a lot of depth, they're perfectly adequate for filling a small to mid-sized room. The little remote works fine, but I don't really use it. Works great with our 2G nano and 1G touch. Exactly what I needed, and the price was right!

 "Failed after 6 weeks!" 2009-09-09
By C. Harris
My dock has distorted sound when playing ipod through it after only 6 weeks. No it isn't the ipod which is fine. Haven't managed to work out how to get a replacement or refund yet! Pretty disgruntled.

Liked the unit until it stopped working properly......

 "Pretty much perfect" 2009-08-27

Here's what I needed from an alarm clock, and how the iLuv i177 responded:

1) Plays/charges the iPod AND shuffles the tracks every morning. I don't want to wake up to the same song, or set of songs everyday, and I know that many cheaper alarm clocks have that problem.

* i177 says: We can do that!

2) Dual alarm, (In my case, one for weekdays, the other for weekends.)

* i177 says: CHECK!

3) Doesn't have a huge glaring LCD keeping me up at night. I've fought this with every alarm clock I've bought, and it got to the point where I'd just keep a card in front of the screen, which really wasn't useful. And it was orange LCD. Gross.

* i177 says: You want pitch black at night and pleasantly visible during the day? Done!

4) Big snooze button. My ex-alarm clock had a massive snooze button (that's what she said) and considering how many times I hit it each morning, I don't want to be forced to wake up to reach/find it.

* i177 says: We can hit that.

5) FM Radio?

* i177 says: Yep.

6) Easy to program?

* i177 says: A bit of tedious touch wheel action never hurt anybody. It's still easy, just different.

7) Fairly compact?

* i177 says: *cough* Come on. You want quality sound and all these crazy functions? We're not Apple, kid. What are you going to do with all that bedside table space anyway?

8) Good sound is pretty nice, but I live in an old, thin walled apartment and I don't want to wake up my neighbor with unexpected PearlJam on full blast...

* i177 says: The alarm volume is programmable so it's not too abrupt for you and it doesn't get blaring for them. Awesome, huh?

8) I was spoiled when I used my mac as an alarm clock because I had the easy remote at hand to change tracks if they were annoying...

* i177 says: You got it. :)

Basically, this thing covers just about everything I could possibly want, plus an absurd AM antenna when I care enough about talk radio to attach it. Except for the size, I'd say the iLuv i177 deserves 4.5-5 stars. Sure, it was $10 cheaper when I bought it and I had a $25 gift card, but it was definitely worth it.
