 "Cord poorly designed" 2009-10-14
By S. Payne (Bentonville, AR United States)
I am looking to upgrade from my old Sennheiser CX300's. Based on the good reviews I tried the Shure SE115. The main cord is much to short to be of any use at all, with a big heavy straight 3.5mm plug. With the cord extension the entire cord is so heavy the buds were pulled from my ears. Using the short cord and my Sansa Clip clipped to my shirt collar, the buds would stay in place but the sound was only marginally better than the Sennheiser's, certainly not another $80 worth. I did burn them in for 10 hours before using them.

 "Worth every penny" 2009-10-13

I was a first time buyer. I first bought a different brand of ear buds for $26 because the clerk said they wer a great product. (Sorry, can't remember the name.)I thought it sounded like listening to AM radio. Not an experienced ear bud listener, I asked someone who has owned several if this was what I could expect. He immediately said take them back, and pointed me to these. I wasn't too comfortable paying $65 for any kind of head-phones or ear buds, but the environment at work (kind of loud at times) dictated I give it a try. These were much better sounding, with the bass I expected. What I particularly like is the buds are the soft foam like racing earplugs. You squeeze them in your fingers to roll them smaller, and they expand to your ear eliminating pretty much all noise. As far as durability, within a week I dropped them on the floor unknowingly. One of my co-workers pointed out I was rolling over them with my chair. Thought I just burned $65. Still work fine! Also came with 4 sets of different size buds.

P.S. Does not work well while eating something crunchy.

 "Natural Sound" 2009-10-09
By Wiley (USA)
These may not be for everyone, they take some time to find the best fit and placement. After you figure out which sleeves work best for you, and how to place them for optimal sound, they still often take a little tweaking until you find just the right spot. It seems like many people can't be bothered with the extra trouble. I am a firm believer that these same people have a point. I personally don't mind a minute or so to tweak the fit. As far as the sound goes. All companies are forced to do one of two things. They can either make it sound like a true music monitor, or compromise and try to leave it sounding like music, since the sound monitor approach is for most, too revealing of how bad many recordings are. That said, I believe the compromise that shure has decided on, is as good as any. They sound like music, pesonal preferences abound. If you are willing to spend a little time to get the right fit and placement in your canals, you will find they convey the music nicely. Don't expect miracles, if these aren't your cup of tea, look to something with a different signature, the klipsch image line is pretty good, and the comfort is top notch. I give shure kudos for what I feel to be among the best compromises and still retain the music, voices are splendid. I prefer shures sonic signature, but the klipsch fit. If shure could match the easy fit...wow. Don't get me wrong, the klipsch are good, I give the shure line a very small nod for musicality.

 "Perfect for my purposes" 2009-10-07
By Jesse Murphy
I've long had a pair of freebie earphones that have served me well throughout the years. I don't know where they came from, but they were free, and far superior to the standard pack-in earbuds that come with audio products these days. They did not, however, provide much in the way of sound isolation and were mostly useless for mowing the lawn. They also had a fairly loose fit, and didn't work well for jogging. With these objectives in mind, I set out to find a new pair of earphones. After doing a lot of research, I purchased a pair of SE115s. After trying them out, I was impressed with the sound isolation - my mower is reduced to a dull roar, and I can listen to music on the lowest settings of my iPod. Very impressive. Shure provides three sizes of foam and silicon sleeves. The foam (I use the smallest size) seems more comfortable and provides significantly better sound isolation. They stay put very well, even when sweating.

The build quality of the earphones is good, certainly better than any previous set I've owned. I'm sure the foam sleeves will wear out eventually, but the other parts seem to be well constructed. Shure provides a nice, small, and soft case to keep them in, which also has a pocket for the extra sleeves.

The sound quality of the earphones was somewhat disappointing. It is good, but not much of a step up from my previous earphones. I've played around with the fit, thinking it possible that the seal is not quite right, but that hasn't made much of a difference. I'm not an audiophile, by any means, and sound quality ranks far below durability and sound isolation for me, but I'm still somewhat underwhelmed.

Overall, however, I'm very pleased with my purchase. They are not cheap, but the quality of the product is evident. The fantastic sound isolation alone is worth the price. I will probably get far more use out of these than I did any previous set.

"Excellent sound. Great for keeping out ambient noise." 2009-10-02
By Sam (USA)
I had two reasons for buying these headphones.

One was for working out in the gym. I couldn't stand listening to the same single CD that they just won't change and I wanted to block out the sound. I briefly considered getting the Bose noise-canceling headset but they were too expensive and too bulky for working out.

The other reason, similar to the above, is to block out all ambient noise when traveling on a plane with the migraine inducing cacophony of crying babies. What I used to do was put in good noise protection air plugs and put a headset over that just so that the ordeal of flying wasn't so horrific. Yes, the earplugs blocked out much of the music but I couldn't hear the interminable screaming babies or the overhead speakers. No matter what Bose claims, and some people believe, Bose headsets cannot reduce transient sounds (e.g. voices).

Finally, I never liked the iPod earphones. I find them to be uncomfortable and they don't keep out external noise. I know that they're designed *not* to keep out external noise so that you still hear the outside world.

This comes with a wide variety of ear buds and I wound up using the very smallest.

The sound quality of these earphones is fantastic. Between the sound blocking characteristics of the buds and the high quality of the sound, the external world blissfully ceases to exist. As the instructions state, you would never want to use these where you need to listen to warning sounds like car horns.

I didn't read any of the reviews before buying these earphones. I was in the Apple store buying a nano iPod and I grabbed the the Shure earphones because it said 'sound isolating'. It was somewhat of an impulse purchase.

After I brought them home, but before I opened the package (once opened, they can't be returned for health reasons), I checked out the reviews. Since the reviews were so glowing I decided to buy a set through Amazon for way less money than what I had paid at Apple.

I was amazed at how well the sound isolation works and the great sound quality. When I rip a CD, I set the bit rate to 320 kbps to preserve the sound quality.

Even when I set the volume to fairly low, I wind up talking way too loudly. Between the sound isolation and the music, it's difficult to gauge how loudly you're talking. I'm so glad that I didn't buy the Bose at over 4x the cost.

Where I work, sometimes people talk way too loudly. Now I put these in, play soft music and I don't have to suffer listening to all the sports talk anymore.

I love these earphones. I'm buying another for a close relative.

------- Oct 6, 09 update ------

I ordered and received another set. Ordered on Saturday, arrived on Monday (normal shipping rates).

I checked the price on Amazon today (Tuesday). It skyrocketed 60% from last weekend! I wish my 401(k) increased that much so quickly.
