Just tested the speakers in a duty free shop at the Airport in Buenos Aires. I had expected superior sound based on all these raving reviews, and was completely disappointed. I've been using small portable speakers (Sony SRS A41) that I bought in 1998 (!!) and they blow the Sound Dock clear out of the water, at about the same portability, with clean, unmuddled "honest" sound. The Sound Dock completely butchered my Rachmaninov concierto, and managed to "muddle" even a simple Pink song. Ok, my Sony's don't charge my Ipod, but at least I don't cringe with the sound. No buy. And don't get me started on 400 bucks for this...

My husband and I just purchased a 160GB IPOD and downloaded every song from our CD library on it. We wanted a player that we could take to parks when we were with the kids. This machine is clear and loud- we love it! It is easy to tote around and it sounds awesome! My biggest worry is that it will get stolen when we are on an outing, but we keep a close eye on it. At night, we have been taking it out on the patio when we are in our spa. It's just so convenient! We love it, and the sound is terrific. I can't see how anyone would be disappointed with this purchase!

I've had the sounddock portable for 2 years. I've probably used it only a few times, and I recently discovered that it no longer plays either my iPod touch or my nano, either through the dock connector or through the aux input in the back of the unit. It is, needless to say, out of warranty.
Even before it broke, I was really disappointed with the sound quality. I have a set of ancient bookshelf speakers from Sony (dating from 1996) that have much better fidelity, range, balance, tone -- you name it. The Bose has really poor sound quality, particularly for classical music (too much base) and vocals (treble is totally lost and everything sounds flat). Even for some pop (like my fave band, The Killers), the Bose had way too much base. It just doesn't sound like music.

The Bose SoundDock Portable has amazing bass for such a small unit. I have owned other iPod docking stations, some considered "high end" but none compare to the bass of the Bose. Also produces great highlights in the treble end and is a please to listen to. I was disappointed in the life of the battery between charges. Bose states that the battery will last about 3 hours on full volume. That's just about true on most volume settings. The battery remains charged for a considerable time when not in use, so I got two batteries.

Other than being expensive, the unit functioned well in different conditions.
sound was not tinny. Battery is terrific. holds a charge well at moderate volumes.
no real ipod touch issues though the ipod hangs up occasionally. At about 18 months, the remote quit working. I changed the battery but it wasn't that. Next I replaced the remote but it wasn't that. now strange as it sounds, the side controls have gone all flaky. the buttones don't work but if you touch near the bottons you can raise and lower the volume. some electrostatic something I guess. Strangest thing yet was that I leaned a bag of chips against the back of the unit and the volume slid up to full. I had to snatch the ipod out of the cradle or risk ear damage as the - button wasn't where I expected it to be. I know this sounds crazy but I test hardware/software for a living and am being as descriptive of the issues as I know how. I have ordered the HK go play as there is a decent deal on the old units at this time, 214.00. when it comes in I'll rma the sounddock and update this with what I learn from bose regarding repairs.
