 "Better than I expected" 2009-09-08
By Gaine Chung
I really didn't expect much from this product. It's a generic item, which is why it goes for much less than any of the other brand names out there. But it worked a lot better than I expected.

First off, do not expect CD quality sound. This is, after all, an FM transmitter and those who've experienced FM transmitted sound should know it's no better than standard radio (but also, not much worse). There are at times when the sound quality drops -- similar to radio when you're in a parking garage, tunnel, etc.

The wide range of FM stations available and being able to preset it are very nice features. I found the best station for me was in the FM107 range. Despite what others have said, I've noticed that the preset is customizable. At first I noticed it wasn't but after playing around with it I made it preset to 107 (something) MHz. Chalk it up to dumb luck I guess, as I don't know how I did it and there's no explanation on how to do it in the manual. But it is capable of having a preset other than 88.1 MHz.

But my favorite feature is that this also charges your USB device. Driving around for about 25 minutes I noticed the battery went from about half to full at the end of the ride.

I must admit I haven't used it as often as I did when I first got it because there's just no comparison to the quality of CD music. And the bottom 'handles' to hold my device up doesn't do a good enough job. Hence, the 4 stars instead of 5.

"Works fine for a month or so" 2009-09-04
By J. Mulhearn
After a few weeks of using this once every 2 or 3 days, the rubber connection fell apart, and the unit is dead. It is NOT well-made. If you plan to leave this plugged into your charger, it may last longer than a month. As other reviewers have explained, this allkit charger works for some, but the FM channels are limited, and treble sounds muffled in broadcasts. Given the construction, I would not recommend this to anyone.

"Inexpensive and works pretty darn good!" 2009-09-03
By A. McCullough (Carnegie, PA USA)
This is the third FM transmitter I've purchased; the first was a $10 no-name that worked great for a year until it fried itself, the next was an actual branded Belkin unit that couldn't filter out a darn thing in terms of car A/C and other stations (and incoming signals on my cell phone just made that thing shriek), and now this eForcity goodie. This model's RF filter is excellent - no interference at all from the car itself nor the cell phone. Very slight amounts of static occasionally when driving out of city range, but nothing unduly noticeable. Station setting is easy, and sound clarity - while perhaps not CD quality to the pure audiophile, is pretty darn good to my ears. The only problem I've had with it was the base connector somehow unscrewed itself and its built-in fuse fell out - an easy fix, simply screwed the bottom nut back on a bit tighter. This probably occured because I'm always removing the unit and placing it in my glovebox so no one will see it when I'm not in the car. I bought this to use with my 3rd generation iPod Nano - it works great with this item and it performs well as a charger also (though my iPod rarely leaves the car!).

This appears to be a knockoff of a model sold in Canada known as the Canada Drive Safe unit - I've only seen this item's home page, where it is listed at almost $70 CA. I'm sure this item works very well, but for under twenty bucks, the eForcity unit does everything I want it to do. One person commented that the unit does not turn off the iPod/iPhone when you shut off the car ... actually, none of the three models I've had thus far (including the Belkin!) have done that, so I don't count that as a negative against this model.

The station indicator on the top of the model is indeed in a rather awkward place, but fortunately I don't need to change the station once it's set very often. There is a little blue light on the top of the power connector that I find rather irritating while driving at night (my significant other, on the other hand, likes it), but a little piece of electrical tape can cover that right up :)I drive a Toyota with the power socket on the center console right next to the gearshift; I COULD wish for the gooseneck on this model to be a tad longer so it would get up OVER the gearshift knob, but it is flexible enough to bend out of the way.

Overall, I really like the unit and deem it to be well worth the few dollars it costs. I will actually buy a second one as a gift.

"Mediocre transmitter, OK holder and charger." 2009-08-25
By Algernon Sydney
This product has three jobs: Holder, Charger, and FM transmitter. It's adequate and may be good enough for the budget-conscious, but it does have several annoyances.

As a Charger:

Seems to work, no problems.

As a Holder:

The side clamps and bottom tabs are fully adjustable and accommodate my iPod's sleeve/case well. I keep the holder tilted back a little, and have had no problems with the iPod slipping out.

The long flexible, goose-neck is great for putting the iPod within reach but it slips, as does the friction ring on the power-plug. The unit does not always stay in position.

As an FM transmitter:

Couldn't get the presets to stick and it's impossible to see the transmitter display while driving. This is very annoying on trips that cover more than one broadcast area.

The sound quality is "AM" at best. Fortunately, the iPod's headphone jack is still accessible, so you can bypass the transmitter (to your car's aux port).

Pros:

-----

1) Adequate holder and charger, for the price.

2) Does not block the iPod's headphone jack.

3) Better than nothing as an FM transmitter. OK for most podcasts and audiobooks. Not so good for music.

Problems:

---------

1) The transmitter display is unreadable from the driver's seat -- especially if the iPod is positioned so its screen is readable.

2) The transmitter defaults to 88.1 MHz and the presets do not seem to work. This is a pain every time you start your car, if 88.1 MHz is not usable for you.

3) There is no (working) remote control. This means that you must look, and grab, at the unit to change FM frequency or start/stop/rewind the iPod. This is difficult and dangerous while driving.

4) The unit has two bright blue lights. These are a major annoyance for night driving -- especially away from city lights.

5) The unit does not position the iPod as well, or as firmly as, a good-quality mounting system.

6) The iPod is not stopped or paused when the car is shutoff or started.

 "somewhat works" 2009-08-23
By G. Sekinger (Sewickley, PA USA)
I bought this based on the 5-star reviews. All I wanted was to be able to charge my iPhone in the car. The FM transmitter was a nice bonus for me.

The transmitter does not deliver CD quality. The high end is chopped off. I don't think there is a "best" FM frequency to set for this - it all depends on where there's gap in where radio stations broadcast. For me, 88.1 works w/o interference.

The extra cable for the hands free also is a pain. When you plug it in, the audio goes over that like when you have a headphone attached. That means that you need to control the volume on the iphone for it to work properly. I don't use that at all now.

It's a cheap accessory. So for the money, I guess it's ok. It does charge the phone and gives me basic music playback. If you buy this, just don't expect too much.

----

Update (8/24)

The FM transmitter has now started working only intermittently. It's on for a bit and then there's nothign but static on the radio. I have to unplug/re-plug it a couple of time to get it transmitting again. I'm not expecting this to last very long. But it still does charge the phone, which was the main reason why I bought it.
