Well i wanted a nice hands free set and i have owned the ER-6 series and i have to say thy are very alike except the mic, and that the jack is straight insted of 90 degree angle, witch will be fixed soon. Where my problems started was right out of the box. But the service form both amazon and etymotic was AWSOME! The left side did not work, so was pissed off since i needed them for a flight. It is uncommon for it to happen but, everyone is human so we make mistakes... i called Etymotic and told them of the problems, they said they have had some problems with the jack and the the problem was being addressed, so if i sent them my they would send me the new and improved version back. But i wanted them today , so i called amazon and told them of the problems and since i was calling on a friday afternoon, next day delivery was unlikely.... after sitting on hold for a while to see if he could get me next day delivery. i thought to my self id rather not have any problems with the next pair since it could happen. so i decided to send it to etymotic to get the new version and get a pair of ER-4 fixed the same time. I had discussed this with the service manager earlier and she told me it would be $85 to fix them, and after debating it while on hold with Amazon. i went for fixing both of them. I called back the service manager and we set everything up and i asked her how much but she did a really cool thing and fixed my Er-4 for free and since i was out of the country for so long, she would ship them to me in NORWAY for free to so i have to say the this company takes care of their costumers! After i had sent the head phones to etymotic, i checked my amazon account and somehow the guy misunderstood me and had sent me a replacement overnight, so i could have had a new pair the next day and sent the bad ones back, so i applaude amazon for doing such a good job of keeping me happy. I would recommend any of their products to anyone who loves good quality sounds and likes to preserve their hearing as they block out almost all sounds!

Having been done with the earbud type of headphones that come with your typical iPod/iPhone, or others along those lines, I've been using "higher-end" sets with passive noise isolation. I've tried the Etymotic Research and the Shures, and have normally been very pleased. When ER announced that they were doing a special headset for smartphones (read: iPhones), I was very excited. I put in my order immediately and relished being able to listen to my music in a quiet and hi-fi environment (in you head). Of coursem they did not dissapoint in sound quality, as they are built in comparison with some of their higher end in-ear headphones.
Nonetheless, some months after daily use, I noticed that I wasn't getting sound from one of the earpieces. I wasn't sure how this had happened, so I contacted ER who promptly had me submit my set for review. I got a new pair in the mail pretty quickly, and resumed my music-listening bliss.
Until a couple of months after that, when I noticed that the jack wire was apparently breaking up and had intermitent sound in one of the pieces. Wash, rinse, and repeat, and now on my fourth headset I am convinced that while ER has excelled in the earpieces portion of this item, they have neglected the jack portion of the wire, which is easily bent and ruins the connection to the earpiece.
Thankfully their warranty is extensive, and they have replaced it everytime with no cost (except shipping to them). I wish they would pay more attention to that part of the headset, since you cannot expect everyone to sit at home and not move while listening to their music on their portable MP3 player/phone.
So, this means this is an excellent sounding headset with high fidelity and excellent noise isolation. The construction of the jack-wire part is not on par with the rest of the set, unfortunately.

The sound is fantastic. Bass is fine unless you listen exclusively to heavy duty beats. Comfort will take a little getting used to but after a few days I did not feel them in my ears.

Rather than repeat the content of many other reviews, let me summarize a few pluses and minuses:
-- Very good sound clarity and quality
-- Excellent sound isolation, though "cable noise" is far from negligible
-- Decently comfortable, even over 10+ hours on a transatlantic flight
-- Good build quality, with a convenient pouch to carry the earphones around
-- The microphone is also v. good
-- The "remote" for iPod works only to start, stop, skip a song. It does NOT control the volume, which is a serious lack of functionality imho
In total, the hf2 are a GREAT ear-phone for travelling in a plane, or listening to music at home or at the office. If I receive a phone call, I simply un-plug the hf2 from my iPod and plug them into my cell-phone. Rather convenient.
For more outdoorsy activities (and, to a certain extend, even just walking in the street), I would rather recommend a nice set of standard ear-phones.

I travel rather extensively and have been using the Bose noise canceling headset for years. Generally speaking, I am happy with it. It's just getting a bit too bulky for my briefcase. Thus, the justification for a high-quality earphone. I got the Etymotic research HF2 for my iphone after having seen rave reviews. It is clearly an acoustic earphone. First impression: the sound is clear and distinctive. There is an note in the package reminding the user to tightly insert the earbud inside the ear canal to be able to hear the bass. I followed the instructions, which was a bit unusual for an earphone user (that is, open your mouth, pull up your earlobe, insert the earbud and twist it in to seal the ear canal). I felt a bit strange, but eventually get used to the process. But the disappointing thing is the fact that sound was not full, and the bass was elusive. For certain "oldies," it sounded like the artist was singing from the room next door. I tried the unit with different types of songs (classical, rock, latin, etc.) and different settings of the equalizer on the iphone... some slight differences, but I did not hear much the full range that I expected to hear. The only enjoyment was to listen to a guitar solo. The sound was pleasantly crisp. A friend from an old school of high-end speakers advised me to "burn" the earphone. I let the iphone play about 30 consecutive hours of music over the weekend, hoping that the sound would get a bit warmer and the bass would be more audible. Barely. So it was a bit of a disappointment. Using the unit as a hand-free phone headset is quite pleasant. The audio was crystal clear. But I am not talkative, and conversation was short. I was looking more for music. I am now thinking of giving it away and to either get the new Quietcomfort 15 or the Bose in-ear headphone. May be I am different then the majority of the people who gave a high review for this unit. I have had, and still owns one, high-end acoustic units at home in my music studio.
