"Less Clutter - Fewer Chords" 2009-10-23
By J. Gerard
The Griffin Simplifi Dock is a great addition to my iMac. The Simplifi replaced my card reader, iPod dock and my USB hub. Since these three devices took all three of the USB ports on the back of the iMac, I needed the hub to add other peripherals, Wacom Tablet, Keyboard and the occasional USB memory stick.

Since the Simplifi only takes one port, I was able to remove the other devices and all of their cables & power chords. Now my desk has a much cleaner look and feel with only one device sitting right next to the monitor. I have room for the peripherals I like to leave connected at all times and I have two additional ports on the back of the Simplifi hub.

Some of the less favorable review comment on the lack of charging when the computer is not on, but my apple universal dock did not charge any of my iPods unless the computer was on. The power chord is for providing power to the USB peripherals that require more power, it may have been a nice addition to have iPod charging capability when the computer is off, but this is not a deal breaker because I usually want to charge and synch at the same time. For what it's worth, it does continue to charge when the iMac goes to sleep.

"Great desktop organizer, with a few flaws." 2009-09-30
By Joseph Ballow (Boston, MA)
Having just moved into a collage dorm, my desk is a bit more cramped than before. I bought this dock to organize a few usb cables, as well as dock my iphone.

-The SD card slot and usb hub works great. There are blue leds on each port that light up when connected, but they are dim so you can sleep with them on unlike certain products that light up the room. I have not yet tried other types of memory cards with the dock.

-The included usb cord is very short. For me this is a plus, as the cord just goes from the far side of my laptop to where I want the dock. It is made for laptops I would say, as I doubt a desktop positioned under the desk would have a chance of reaching. It would be easy to use a longer cord, but another reviewer claims to have problems with this.

-The iphone dock works fine for charging and syncing. Before I would go a week without syncing, but now I sync the phone every time I sit down at the desk. These intermittent charges also make the battery last a little longer.

-The major flaws with the product involve ease of use. The dock is lighter then I would have hoped, and although the bottom is a rubbery pad, it seems to have no anti-skid properties. This means docking the phone or using a memory card almost always requires two hands. Even using the touch screen while the phone is in the dock will cause it to slide. This wouldn't be a huge problem, except that I dock the phone 10+ times a day.

-Also, of the many included dock adapters, none fit fit my iphone 3gs well. This means a little fiddling each time to line the connector up, which would happen automatically if the adapter fit better.

Overall, this dock is very useful and goes a long way to reducing desktop clutter. Although not perfect it still seems to me to be one of the best available. I would gladly purchase the dock again.

"Lights are on, but no iPhone recognized." 2009-08-13
By ERNEST
Not much to say. I used the enclosed cables and power supply. I plugged everything in and the light on the dock came on immediately. But when I put my iPhone in the dock, it did not charge or connect. I restarted my computer a few times trying to figure out why my iPhone was not charging. Then just before repacking the unit to return, the USB connection was recognized! (USB Voodoo?).

And remember, charging power comes from the USB cable, not the wall-plug-in power supply. The wall-plug power is used to support the other dock functions (2 back USB ports and card readers).

Other drawback...No inserts to accommodate Griffin slim iPhone case.

Good Luck!

 "Minimal functionality" 2009-08-13
By gadgetmaster (Austin, TX United States)
If you looking for a way to leave your laptop at home while on vacation with your DSLR, this is NOT it.

Incapable of functioning as card reader for iPhone. Memory cards' files must go through computer first.

Incapable of charging docked iPhone without a powered USB connection to a powered on computer. Will not charge iPhone using supplied AC wall wart adapter. Will not charge with USB plugged into Apple AC to USB wall wart that comes as stock accessory with iPhone 3Gs.

Did manage to read a 266x Transcend CF card at 26 MB/sec into Macbook Pro laptop. But as a card reader this thing is large and heavy.

"Does exactly what it should do, and looks great doing it!" 2009-08-07
By Bradley Crandall (Illinois, United States)
This is the perfect companion to a computer (especially a Mac) that doesn't have a built-in memory card reader. The reader functions beautifully, and the iPod dock works like a charm. I haven't tried out the USB dock, so I don't want to pass judgement on it. This is a great looking device that does its job perfectly, and was a great deal on top of it all ($43 vs. $69 at the Apple Store).
