The Onkyo TX-8255 Receiver was easy to set up, but most importantly works beautifully with all my other equipment. I was worried about 50 watts/channel, but no issue. The sound is better than my original receiver. The remote is easy to use. Highly recommend this product.Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver

 "Nice receiver" 2009-10-26
By Dave (Philly)
I wanted a decent amp with good sound and decent frequency response. I didn't need surround sound and other bells and whistles. I wanted a receiver/amp that would play music and sound great. This product fits the bill. I have it hooked up to my old Polk 10s with a cd player, mp3 player and HD radio. It was a perfect fit for me.

 "Onkyo Review" 2009-10-26
By Tickie (va)
Am very pleased with the performance of the unit. Everything was as promised.

Only very mild dislike is the way the preset radio station function is set up. Would prefer that the unit allowed the user to go directly to the desired radio station. The unit as designed only allows sequencing through the entire set of preset stations. It is hard to tell which station you have landed on.

Otherwise everything is fine.

I purchased the TX-8255 as a receiver/amp for my TV and ipod. I first thought 50 watts was going to be too quiet, so I was pleasantly surprised when I got the speakers hooked up. Plenty of sound and easy to set up.

 "Geezer in MA" 2009-10-21
By Sailor sailor man (Boston MA area)
This summer, the 20+ year old AM/FM receiver in my Maine vacation cottage died. It was a remarkablly reliable and sophisticated Technics receiver whose power supply gave out. After searching for a replacement, I selected the Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver based on its simplicity (I wanted a good FM tuner plus inputs for a CD and audio tape), apparent power plus reliability, and of course cost. Amazon's price was the best, though at other times I could have found it for less. I ordered regular shiping but it arrived in two days!!!

The unit is as advertized: a basic receiver. No real bells and whistles. The sound is good to my elderly ears and controls are intuitive. I set it up in about five minutes, turned on the power and my problem was solved. Just what the doctor ordered.

Complaints? Nothing I didn't expect based on reviews and descriptions I'd read. Still, I am disappointed it doesn't have a loudness button and its tuning interval is .1 mhz (not .05 the Technics had), so it can't pull in distant stations as well as I'd like - i.e like the Technics.

Would I recommend it? Yes.

By Andres Diaz Alvear (Cuenca, Ecuador)
good characteristics, nice eq. simple, but with all the basic function and a plus.

only two negative thing that i noticed:

1. When you navigate the folders to search a song i always returns to the root. so if u are int the folder no 30, when you navigate it will appear AGAIN AND AGAIN since the 1st folder, so its very uncomfortable to search the songs again from the beginning. that probem has been fixed in alpine brand.

2. When you select to play the songs in random mode u hope that if you press the next button the system will ramdom your next song, but it doesnt, it only use the random mode when u have finished to hear the song, and then it randoms the next song, but if you press the bnext button it will take you to the next song and do not do random.

Sorry about my english je

"no vol control and too low for my devices" 2009-10-13
By jilla
There is no volume control or any other functions, you just plug your device in and it plays. No on/off button, either. I'm all for the simpler the better, but I need to be able to adjust the speaker's volume, they are way too low out of the box. Also, fyi it comes in that impossible plastic packaging where you need a box cutter, fencing gloves and nerves of steel to free your item. Also, my speakers also keep flopping over, it won't stand up like in the picture for more than a few seconds, I have to prop it against something. I can't use them for the purpose I bought them, so I tried them with my daughter's portable CD player to get rid of some of the wires, because not having a power cord is a real 5 star feature - but they are still way too low even for bed time lullibies. I have the volume all the way up on the CD player and the other speakers I have been using have to be on one of their lowest settings. So maybe I just got a dud Sony compact travel speaker - but it's junk.

"Spend a little more and get the IM237 speaker!" 2009-10-23
By Carrie C. Mahin (Radford, VA)
This speaker is a poor substitute for the far superior Altec IM237. Wanting to save money, I ordered this IM207 which stopped working properly about a month later. It came as something of a relief since the on/off switch is nearly impossible to use - very poorly designed. I should have heeded other reviewers' comments on this feature! My daughter owns the IM237 and it is a wonderful speaker. Great sound, durable and easy to use on/off button. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more for the IM237. This speaker is going back to Amazon.

The 207 is not as loud as the 237. Turning on the 207 is way too difficult, and impossible with sweaty hands! mine broke after maybe 50 turn ons.

I got this for 15 dollars at walmart after I bought a 237 off amazon, the 237 is most definately a better choice, Do not bother with this model.

 "Fine if not moved" 2009-10-10
By Shane B (Long Beach, CA)
The product looks good and it's simple to use, though the on/off switch is difficult to use. Turning it on or off requires spinning the top cap which tends to be rather tough to turn, especially with no hand grips, my hands tend to slide rather then spin the cap.

My main problem with the product is the sound output. The quality is fine, though washed out near max volume. The problem is that if you move the cable whatsoever you start hearing loud static noises, so this is for stationary use only, and it requires setting it down perfectly to not cause the static.

 "Perfect!" 2009-10-08
By Daren G. Peck (Hampton,VA)
I have just bought this speaker today, after reading reviews for about a year! I bought it for $12.95 at blank blank. In the past I have had 12 different types of portable speakers. Any thing from sony cube speakers, ihome, logitech, philips, and so on. I have been a bass player for 30 years and into audiophile equipment for as long. What I can say is that in high end speakers such as bose or yamaha or boston acoustics the cones themselves have the ability to move very fast. Bad speakers do not have this ability, that is why bad ones do not have the clarity needed to reproduce all the tones in music. This altec lancing im207 does. If I where to take this speakers and times it by ten in size then it would be on par with speakers costing hundreds of dollars. It is the most accurate sounds I have heard period. Very musical and alive and no need for two speakers because small units have no stereo separation anyway. The on off switch is easy, you cant put pressure on it, just go easy on it. Don't grip it like a jar. opening the battery compartment is easy. press on the rubber pads and push with your thumbs in the direction indicated. No on off light to save power. Altec lancing have bean making speaker for over 80 years. I have decided that this is my favorite portable and I think it funny just how smart the designers are, and afters years of loving music this comes along in such a simple and perfect way.

I spent the extra money for these thinking they would stay in my ear as I jog,,,well I was very dissappointed, they slide out as you work out more intensly..the name makes it sound like they will expand and fit your ear tight, but they do not..I was happier with the five dollar panasonic from amazon, they actually fit better. the sound on these jvc is good, but the eighteen dollar retail is not worth it...you will be happier with the ten dollar jbuds thru amazon, they are much better, I bought a pair.

This headphones really isolates background noise. It is good enough that I use it as a earplug.

The built has a rubbery feel. Bass quality are really impressive.

Not recommended when driving because you won't hear the road noise outside the vehicle like

ambulance, car honking, or your passenger talking to you.

"Very, very good earbuds - not perfect." 2009-09-21
By Lawrence V. Mendoza (Northern California)
Interestingly, these JVC Marshmallow earbuds are a bit controversial - notice that the comments are all over the board - there's alot of love and "not love" here. Having owned these for several months now, I believe I can put my finger on a few salient points:

1. These are finicky to fit. I found it took me over a month of toying with these, and switching back and forth between the different foam earpieces before I settled on a fit. It's a combination of pressure and size, and it's not easy to find the "magic point" where they leap to their fullest sound. However once they do, they really take off. The MOST sensitive to fit is the bass response - off just a little and it effectively vanishes. I also found a substantial difference in bass response just between the foam earpieces. I'm not surprised that many people simply run out of patience with these, and can't or won't ever get 'em right, which is too bad because the sonics are worth the effort.

2. These are very sensitive to the quality of your MP3 player. I have both "high end" MP3 players (Creative and Rio), and several no-name players, and the sound difference between them in the JVCs is quite dramatic. With the off-brand players (no manual EQ) there simply isn't a setting at which these headphones sound great, even with the proper fit. However, with the "high end" players, the sound quality is very, very good.

3. When you get the JVCs right, they are very, very good. I am an audio enthusiast, and I have quite a stomach for fiddling with my systems to get things right. When you get the JVC Marshmallows right - proper fit, quality MP3 player, hi resolution music - these things spring to life. The box touts the bass frequency down to 8MHz (!) BUT they do run strongly below 40hz with proper material, and it's quite clean and sharp. The midrange is not bad per se, just a bit laid back - "soft" would be the word - and not at all offensive - in fact for many types of music, it works well - for instance, strong male vocals on heavy recordings can be fantastic - the marshmallows do Chris Isaak at 320kbps MP3 beautifully. Highs are bright and airy - they need no help from either the material or the MP3 settings, and can easily be over-sharpened.

When you get 'em right, the JVC Marshmallows reproduce very, very good sound, and have an easy "listenability" to them - you can use them all day without fatigue. Just don't over-brighten or over-bass them too much. And they are an excellent training ground for eventually moving to higher end in ear systems, since the way you put these in your ears is essentially the same as with the Big Dollar boys. So 5 stars for sound quality, less a star for the finicky fit. However, I applaud JVC for introducing a product to the low end market (under $20) with so much in common with more expensive earbuds, including very good sound.

"Much better than iPod phones, and even better than the Sony's but not perfect." 2009-09-14
By S. Power (Detroit, Michigan, United States)
**Update 1**

(16SEP09)

I ran with these again today, and am starting to think that for running I gave them too many stars. I spent way too much of my run having to adjust them and re-insert them. At some points, as they first started to work themselves loose in my ear, they created a thumping noise in my ear with every step as the marshmallow vibrated against my ear. Another problem with these, is that they are so stubby, that the bent part of the bud pushes against the lower part of your ear when fully inserted. After 30 or 40 minutes of running, this actually gets painful.

Again, these might be fine for sitting on an airplane or studying but for working out, especially running, they are NOT RECOMMENDED.

**Base Review**

(15SEP09)

I bought these yesterday at Walmart. They charged me $19 plus tax, so you are definitely much better off buying these at Amazon.com. Learn from my mistake. Yes, for some products, Walmart is cheaper but not for much.

I have almost never used the stock Apple iPod headphones. Those Apple ones don't fit nor stay in my ears very well. Because of the bad fit, they don't sound very good.

These JVC headphones are supposed to fit well and isolate noise. They do both better than the Apple headphones, and slightly better then the similar Sony ear buds that I have been using for years. The Sony's that I'm comparing these against have silicon replaceable buds, similar but not as foamy as the JVC "marshmallow buds". I replaced the Sony's with these, because they stop working after about four months of running with them. I assume this is because of sweat getting into them and corroding the speakers. I don't know whether or not this will be an issue with the JVC headphones yet, but if they stay in place better than the Sony ones, they should. I think the Sony ones get so much sweat in them, because of constantly having to be re-inserted in the ear, and therefore pushing sweat in the speakers.

The noise isolation of these headphones definitely works well, especially for the money. When you first insert them, it is very noticeable, and would work very well for lawn work or flying. I wear Bose QC2 headphones for flying and these aren't quite up to that level, but for the price, they are certainly a cost effective alternative.

When I first started running with JVCs, I was very impressed with how well they were staying in place in my ears. I was starting to think that I would complete my whole run without having to reinsert or adjust them. That lasted until I started to get pretty saturated in sweat. I don't know if there are sweat glands in your ears, but I was thinking that if they stayed in place, they wouldn't get sweat on them, and would therefore stay in place. Either they loosened up on their own at this point, or the sweat caused them to work free, but eventually, they came loose and I had to reinsert them.

The sound quality of these is very good, at least as good as the Sonys.

In summary, these are the best running headphones that I have used, but are not perfect. I recommend them.

Got them for my motorcycle. They work fine and the quality is good. I find the JVC HAF66B's a little more comfortable and bloc outside sound better. I like the ability to push a slide up the wire to bring it tighter under my chin and pretty much elimiate any cable noise.

I purchased this item and within minutes plugged it to my Sony receiver. Ipod fits snug and no chance of falling off. It's nice that it charges the player as well. At first music sounded boomy, but once I read the manual that came w/ the dock it explained how to change the settings in the Ipod for better sound. It works great and it's a welcomed addition to my home theater.

Just make sure that you have a Sony receiver that supports DMP (Digital Media Port) plug.

I would recommend to all.

I've had it for a few weeks now and I'm very happy with it. It works very well with my Sony HT-SS2300 Home Theater System and I can use the remote control to scroll thru my music on my iPod. You can't see the iPod menu on the T.V screen but I have seen some other models that do and I was not impressed, the menus looked old and out dated as if you were looking at an Atari system from the 80's. So if you just want to listen to music from your iPod it is worth it to buy this Cradle.

My son is thrilled with this. States that his Ipod fits better in this one than the origional one that came with the stereo. The price was the best I found on the web ( of course I consider shipping into the total cost of the item) So far so good. I would buy another one from here I needed to.

I recently did a sound system upgrade with a Sony STR-DG720 7.1 reciever. It has a proprietary DOXport plug versus a USB 2.0 Which I would have preferred. However, the TDM-iP10 comes with 6 different adapter plates for ALL ipod designs, past and present. The most intersting feature of this unit is that once you plug your ipod in, you can use your reciever's remote control to select, skip, pause, play on your ipod without touching it. Also, a digital signal is going from the ipod bottom plug so the signal is more clear versus using the head phone top jack. This is a must for anyone that has a Sony receiever and an ipod!
