"Fine unit hampered by poor amp/speaker design" 2009-11-02
By R. Chi (San Francisco, CA USA)
This is a fine ipod clock radio paired with a so-so speaker and even more so-so amplifier. I really like the control and how the unit operates. But the big let down is the audio quality and the hiss from the amplifier that is the deal breaker for me.

Good

- Digital FM reception is crystal clear! I also like being able to see what the station is playing!

- Functional LCD, it is a bit small, but does what it does well. Displays both alarm clock time/mode right there on the LCD! The yellow amber color is nice.

- The nicest buzzing sound of any radio clock I've owned. It's actually a tick tick of various rhythms.

- I like the touch controls. Feel very high tech. Some may say this unit is hard to program or use, but I don't have any issue setting the various controls. In fact I kind of like the control.

- unit is silent when off, no hissing/buzzing/humming electronic noise. You may wonder why I even put this down, but I briefly owned a Sony CD clock radio that have an annoying hum when the unit is plugged in!! And this is supposed to be something next to your bed while you sleep! Lack of any of these noise indicates quality components.

Bad

- noticeable hiss from the unit/amp. It's not terrible, but definitely noticeable, especially with the ipod input and quiet musics. This is poor amplifier design, and a major let down of an otherwise perfectly designed unit.

- OK sound quality. I don't like the bass. It sounds very boxy (perhaps the speaker needs to be broken in, but I doubt it will improve too much.) I get the feeling this is an artifact of too much bass push. There's no bass/tremble control, so you are stuck with how it sounds. At low to medium sound levels, sometimes I can hear distortion in voices (very slight breakup by heavy speakers), probably coming from the speakers. It happens rarely but is there.

- Nit pick: The volume increment is slightly too big. It only takes about 2-3 clicks to go from a bit low to a bit high (for me). At 50% volume it is too loud for my taste. Good amplifiers usually provide a very precise and large range in the comfortable listening range.

Overall I feel like this is a unit designed by a computer company, not an audio company, as the cons I've pointed out generally do not happen with good audio equipment. I really want to keep this unit, got it for a steal at Costco comparing to amazon prices. But the deal breaker for me is the hiss from the amplifier, I can live with everything else, but the hiss is really annoying, especially on a quiet night in the bedroom which is what it is designed for. The electronics and design and control are very good, in fact light years ahead of any clock radio I've owned. But they cheaped out on the amplifier and the speakers a bit. I think the audio quality would've been a little better had there been less of a bass push.

 "Comments from a Bachelor" 2009-10-11
By Casual Loafer (Charlottesville, VA USA)
Overall an elegant, great sounding speaker system for my Ipod. As a bachelor, I wanted to avoid the college dorm style I-Homes which scream for attention. This Altec system is sleak and sounds great from mid-range through treble. The bass is there, not great but it's there. Also the moon glow makes for a nice nightlight.

This isn't something to give your grandmother to use. You do have to do a little more than simple alarm clocks to set the alarm, but there are also way more options (including wake up volume, choice between tone, radio, or ipod, days of the week, etc). Anyone who uses a computer should be able to operate the system without a problem.

Overall if you're willing to sacrifice ease of use for a great design, this is your speaker system.

Also lot of reviewers are having problems using the buttons on the device. I've found my pressing the buttons with the pads of my fingers rather than my finger tips, I never have a problem. Unfortunately the remote is tiny and I've lost it, but I can get by without it.

 "best below 200" 2009-09-18
By Oleg Zelenin (VA USA)
Well, I think it's one of the best ipod docks below $200. Don't expect much from the sound - it's not hi-fi. But it's pretty good to take place in your bedroom or kitchen.

By the way, it looks relly great.

 "glorified" 2009-09-01
By peggy sue (Chicago)
I purchased this item from amazon and I am so glad I did. It is a wonderful system for the price. The sound is great, the alarm works well, and it looks so nice. It's small, perfect size to sit anywhere. It was very easy to set everything up. The touch is a little sensitive, you have to be light handed setting things, and the moon glow light, they could have kept that, it doesn't give enough light for any mood, (that's why I gave it a four star instead of a five) but everything else is great. I have two other altec lansing speakers and a logitech but I love this one the best. The ipod touch didn't work well in the other two and wouldn't charge it, this one does it all and plays better than the others. The wireless snooze is awesome and the radio sounds a good as my larger unit. I have it about 8 feet away from my bed so you have to put the clock on by itself and up bright to see it, which meant I couldn't have the song titles on the screen also, but who needs the song titles. All in all this is a very good, sturdy product. Be careful of the romote, it is very small and you definitely need it for some functions. You will not be disappointed.

"Does what I wanted it to!" 2009-07-26
By Brian D. Scott (Pflugerville, TX USA)
I just received the M402 yesterday, set it up completely including alarms and preferences, and have been listening to it since. I just bought a 120 GB iPod Classic and wanted a device like this to facilitate playback and clock/alarm features in our bedroom. I waffled between a Sony, an iHome, and a Logitech system before settling on this system.

The only initial hang-up I had was when I used one of the Altec Lansing-included dock adapters it wasn't quite deep enough to create the proper contact between the iPod and the system - using the Apple-included adapter fixed that.

At all volumes, the music is clear and free of distortion - it is interesting to hear the difference in some of my MP3s that were sampled at a lower rate than others. I decided to place the system across the room on a cocktail table we have in a corner as opposed to my nightstand to avoid blocking the speakers. The display is small but easy to read - the clock digits show full-size when the unit is turned off.

My wife has the snooze alarm on her nightstand, while I have the full remote on mine. The expanded remote is truly my only nitpick I have for the entire system for these reasons:

*Extremely small - the dimensions are 3 inches by 1 inch

*No way to see keys in the dark - some sort of glow-in-the-dark technology could've been used

*Lack of key differentiation - other than the Snooze button, all of the other keys feel exactly the same

*Aim - you have to point the remote directly at the unit toward the top for it to affect it

The snooze alarm is great because it's radio frequency-based as opposed to infrared, and it's easy to figure out, even in the dark, and it works great! My wife and I tested the alarm shutoff and play/pause functions and they performed as advertised.

I would tell anyone to determine what their particular need is before deciding on a product, and then audition it in a B&M with their own iPod before making a commitment. Some of the reviews I've read here seem to reflect incorrect product choices instead of product quality.
