"Great sound for a portable speaker" 2010-05-07

By Jason Tanaka (Irvine, CA United States)

The speaker itself sounds great, deep bass, very robust. I accidentally had the volume all the way up and plugged it into my iPhone, and it was shockingly loud, yet still sounds good even at that volume.

The only drawback (as others wrote) is the short cable to the music device. No clue why it is only 6 inches long, but you can buy cheap extensions for these on Amazon.

 "Audiophiles - PLEASE READ" 2010-05-05

By J. Walton

All in all, this is a fantastic product. For its price and size, you are not going to find better construction or sound. I was unwilling to purchase it, however, because there is no way I would accept a mono configuration. Following a few very insightful reviews here on Amazon, I simply purchased a product like this to remedy the situation.

I was a bit skeptical about the wiring configuration of the splitter at first, even given the red/white colors, but when I first fired up the intro to AC/DC Hell's Bells, I confirmed that it properly splits left/right.

Of course you will need to purchase two speakers, but you will get true stereo sound. As noted in the other reviews, you can fit the splitter in one of the cases, clip the cases together, and you are set. Obviously, having two speakers not only gives you stereo, but also gives you a great volume boost. I rarely rate a product 5 starts, but this one gets it.

"Just what I needed for traveling" 2010-05-05

By Spark Jonz (Orange, CA)

I've been traveling a lot lately and wanted a small speaker system for my hotel room. This speaker was exactly what I needed! The sound is full and rich. The speaker is small and the travel case is a nice touch. I previously had some Creative Travel speakers and several low cost, worthless speakers, and this one really impressed me in its quality leap from others I have used. I tried out several new alternatives available at the audio store in the San Francisco airport and this one made my jaw drop compared to iHome's and others.

My only complaint is that it is strictly battery driven. While this keeps things really simple when traveling, and the battery lasts a long time, I would like to be able to leave it on without killing the batteries. Specifically, its nice going to sleep to music, and with this speaker, I have to turn it off as I slip into sleep.

But regardless, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a travel speaker. Sounds great, very portable, long battery life. Excellent!

 "Great Little Speaker" 2010-05-05

By Pathfinder (North Carolina)

I was looking for a small, portable speaker for my Ipod Touch and was lured into buying those tiny, black, mushroom looking little speakers based on their good reviews. Bad move for me. They sounded like an old transistor radio on steroids. I realize the shortcomings of tiny speakers but these were just unacceptable to me and I returned them.

I came upon the Altec Lansing im-237's and they also had glowing reviews. Considering Altec Lansing's reputation, I ordered one, hoping that this time, I would get reasonable sound from a very small speaker.

I was not disappointed! This little speaker is amazing for its size. I was not expecting a whole lot considering it's a single speaker and very small but it truly surprised me with the sounds that came from it. My ipod Touch pumped Phil Keaggy guitar solos through it while I munched my lunch and it was very, very, enjoyable.

By all means get this speaker, you won't be sorry!

Like the speaker. Very easy to use, compact. A little tinny - could have more bass. Really didn't expect much more from a small speaker. I would recommend.

"Fine unit hampered by poor amp/speaker design" 2009-11-02
By R. Chi (San Francisco, CA USA)
This is a fine ipod clock radio paired with a so-so speaker and even more so-so amplifier. I really like the control and how the unit operates. But the big let down is the audio quality and the hiss from the amplifier that is the deal breaker for me.

Good

- Digital FM reception is crystal clear! I also like being able to see what the station is playing!

- Functional LCD, it is a bit small, but does what it does well. Displays both alarm clock time/mode right there on the LCD! The yellow amber color is nice.

- The nicest buzzing sound of any radio clock I've owned. It's actually a tick tick of various rhythms.

- I like the touch controls. Feel very high tech. Some may say this unit is hard to program or use, but I don't have any issue setting the various controls. In fact I kind of like the control.

- unit is silent when off, no hissing/buzzing/humming electronic noise. You may wonder why I even put this down, but I briefly owned a Sony CD clock radio that have an annoying hum when the unit is plugged in!! And this is supposed to be something next to your bed while you sleep! Lack of any of these noise indicates quality components.

Bad

- noticeable hiss from the unit/amp. It's not terrible, but definitely noticeable, especially with the ipod input and quiet musics. This is poor amplifier design, and a major let down of an otherwise perfectly designed unit.

- OK sound quality. I don't like the bass. It sounds very boxy (perhaps the speaker needs to be broken in, but I doubt it will improve too much.) I get the feeling this is an artifact of too much bass push. There's no bass/tremble control, so you are stuck with how it sounds. At low to medium sound levels, sometimes I can hear distortion in voices (very slight breakup by heavy speakers), probably coming from the speakers. It happens rarely but is there.

- Nit pick: The volume increment is slightly too big. It only takes about 2-3 clicks to go from a bit low to a bit high (for me). At 50% volume it is too loud for my taste. Good amplifiers usually provide a very precise and large range in the comfortable listening range.

Overall I feel like this is a unit designed by a computer company, not an audio company, as the cons I've pointed out generally do not happen with good audio equipment. I really want to keep this unit, got it for a steal at Costco comparing to amazon prices. But the deal breaker for me is the hiss from the amplifier, I can live with everything else, but the hiss is really annoying, especially on a quiet night in the bedroom which is what it is designed for. The electronics and design and control are very good, in fact light years ahead of any clock radio I've owned. But they cheaped out on the amplifier and the speakers a bit. I think the audio quality would've been a little better had there been less of a bass push.

 "Comments from a Bachelor" 2009-10-11
By Casual Loafer (Charlottesville, VA USA)
Overall an elegant, great sounding speaker system for my Ipod. As a bachelor, I wanted to avoid the college dorm style I-Homes which scream for attention. This Altec system is sleak and sounds great from mid-range through treble. The bass is there, not great but it's there. Also the moon glow makes for a nice nightlight.

This isn't something to give your grandmother to use. You do have to do a little more than simple alarm clocks to set the alarm, but there are also way more options (including wake up volume, choice between tone, radio, or ipod, days of the week, etc). Anyone who uses a computer should be able to operate the system without a problem.

Overall if you're willing to sacrifice ease of use for a great design, this is your speaker system.

Also lot of reviewers are having problems using the buttons on the device. I've found my pressing the buttons with the pads of my fingers rather than my finger tips, I never have a problem. Unfortunately the remote is tiny and I've lost it, but I can get by without it.

 "best below 200" 2009-09-18
By Oleg Zelenin (VA USA)
Well, I think it's one of the best ipod docks below $200. Don't expect much from the sound - it's not hi-fi. But it's pretty good to take place in your bedroom or kitchen.

By the way, it looks relly great.

 "glorified" 2009-09-01
By peggy sue (Chicago)
I purchased this item from amazon and I am so glad I did. It is a wonderful system for the price. The sound is great, the alarm works well, and it looks so nice. It's small, perfect size to sit anywhere. It was very easy to set everything up. The touch is a little sensitive, you have to be light handed setting things, and the moon glow light, they could have kept that, it doesn't give enough light for any mood, (that's why I gave it a four star instead of a five) but everything else is great. I have two other altec lansing speakers and a logitech but I love this one the best. The ipod touch didn't work well in the other two and wouldn't charge it, this one does it all and plays better than the others. The wireless snooze is awesome and the radio sounds a good as my larger unit. I have it about 8 feet away from my bed so you have to put the clock on by itself and up bright to see it, which meant I couldn't have the song titles on the screen also, but who needs the song titles. All in all this is a very good, sturdy product. Be careful of the romote, it is very small and you definitely need it for some functions. You will not be disappointed.

"Does what I wanted it to!" 2009-07-26
By Brian D. Scott (Pflugerville, TX USA)
I just received the M402 yesterday, set it up completely including alarms and preferences, and have been listening to it since. I just bought a 120 GB iPod Classic and wanted a device like this to facilitate playback and clock/alarm features in our bedroom. I waffled between a Sony, an iHome, and a Logitech system before settling on this system.

The only initial hang-up I had was when I used one of the Altec Lansing-included dock adapters it wasn't quite deep enough to create the proper contact between the iPod and the system - using the Apple-included adapter fixed that.

At all volumes, the music is clear and free of distortion - it is interesting to hear the difference in some of my MP3s that were sampled at a lower rate than others. I decided to place the system across the room on a cocktail table we have in a corner as opposed to my nightstand to avoid blocking the speakers. The display is small but easy to read - the clock digits show full-size when the unit is turned off.

My wife has the snooze alarm on her nightstand, while I have the full remote on mine. The expanded remote is truly my only nitpick I have for the entire system for these reasons:

*Extremely small - the dimensions are 3 inches by 1 inch

*No way to see keys in the dark - some sort of glow-in-the-dark technology could've been used

*Lack of key differentiation - other than the Snooze button, all of the other keys feel exactly the same

*Aim - you have to point the remote directly at the unit toward the top for it to affect it

The snooze alarm is great because it's radio frequency-based as opposed to infrared, and it's easy to figure out, even in the dark, and it works great! My wife and I tested the alarm shutoff and play/pause functions and they performed as advertised.

I would tell anyone to determine what their particular need is before deciding on a product, and then audition it in a B&M with their own iPod before making a commitment. Some of the reviews I've read here seem to reflect incorrect product choices instead of product quality.

"Spend a little more and get the IM237 speaker!" 2009-10-23
By Carrie C. Mahin (Radford, VA)
This speaker is a poor substitute for the far superior Altec IM237. Wanting to save money, I ordered this IM207 which stopped working properly about a month later. It came as something of a relief since the on/off switch is nearly impossible to use - very poorly designed. I should have heeded other reviewers' comments on this feature! My daughter owns the IM237 and it is a wonderful speaker. Great sound, durable and easy to use on/off button. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more for the IM237. This speaker is going back to Amazon.

By Karl Kahleck (Hemet, Ca)
The 207 is not as loud as the 237. Turning on the 207 is way too difficult, and impossible with sweaty hands! mine broke after maybe 50 turn ons.

I got this for 15 dollars at walmart after I bought a 237 off amazon, the 237 is most definately a better choice, Do not bother with this model.

 "Fine if not moved" 2009-10-10
By Shane B (Long Beach, CA)
The product looks good and it's simple to use, though the on/off switch is difficult to use. Turning it on or off requires spinning the top cap which tends to be rather tough to turn, especially with no hand grips, my hands tend to slide rather then spin the cap.

My main problem with the product is the sound output. The quality is fine, though washed out near max volume. The problem is that if you move the cable whatsoever you start hearing loud static noises, so this is for stationary use only, and it requires setting it down perfectly to not cause the static.

 "Perfect!" 2009-10-08
By Daren G. Peck (Hampton,VA)
I have just bought this speaker today, after reading reviews for about a year! I bought it for $12.95 at blank blank. In the past I have had 12 different types of portable speakers. Any thing from sony cube speakers, ihome, logitech, philips, and so on. I have been a bass player for 30 years and into audiophile equipment for as long. What I can say is that in high end speakers such as bose or yamaha or boston acoustics the cones themselves have the ability to move very fast. Bad speakers do not have this ability, that is why bad ones do not have the clarity needed to reproduce all the tones in music. This altec lancing im207 does. If I where to take this speakers and times it by ten in size then it would be on par with speakers costing hundreds of dollars. It is the most accurate sounds I have heard period. Very musical and alive and no need for two speakers because small units have no stereo separation anyway. The on off switch is easy, you cant put pressure on it, just go easy on it. Don't grip it like a jar. opening the battery compartment is easy. press on the rubber pads and push with your thumbs in the direction indicated. No on off light to save power. Altec lancing have bean making speaker for over 80 years. I have decided that this is my favorite portable and I think it funny just how smart the designers are, and afters years of loving music this comes along in such a simple and perfect way.

Your iPod perches front and center, resting at an angle to display the current track information and album art while recharging. If your iPod model has the alarm clock and sleep timer features, they will work seamlessly with the iM600.

Various docking adapters are included, making the iM600 compatible with most iPods. Also, an auxiliary input lets you connect any CD, DVD, or MP3 player using a stereo mini-plug.

When searching for a sound dock, it came down to this or the bose dock. I decided that the bose was not worth the extra $$$. I have owned the product for 2 years now and it is working great. Sounds great and has nice base. The pros: great sound, good price point, light weight. The cons: does not charge iphone, does not have AM.

"Great for iPod Touch 2nd Generation" 2009-10-01
By Shirl (Ia.)
We were looking for an attractive portable device with a decent quality speaker system. We tried this item and it's competition the Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere 2. The Altec Lansing looks attractive in our home and doesn't take up much space compared to the longer Logitech. We had both systems in the same room and had others give their opinion by playing the same music on each without their knowing which device we were using. They picked the Altac Lansing each time. We all agreed this performed better all the way around. Some have commented they can't fit their iPod into the slot. We are not using any of the inserts supplied just place it on the slot without, no problem. You do have to watch as you insert it that it is over the prongs correctly. I have a plastic protective backing on my iPod and I do not have to remove it to get it to work. We like the fact that it also includes an FM radio as well. It's been great in the house, on our deck/patio and for travel. The newer version came out a couple weeks after we purchased this one. The added features look great but we like the looks of this better. It would be nice to have a remote that includes more and a handle but it costs more. The shiny plastic does show finger prints but I try to handle it carefully to avoid that. The remote is small but works. Wish it came with a case like the Logitech. For the price range and our use this is the best! It also charges your iPod when plugged in and can be used for an alarm, especially nice when away from home. If you want a Bose sound, then you need to move up in price. We have had this for several months and so far so good. We got a 2 year warranty and by that time newer products will be out.

 "Small package big sound." 2009-10-13

Great portability and travel case. Good sound for the size, however it would be nice to be able to control the bass/treble functions.

"Not exactly the item that was advertised" 2009-09-23
By R. Mesina (CA)
According to the website, it's suppposed to charge any of the ipods (including ipod touch) while it is docked, it doesn't. I ended up returning it, as I really needed it to charge. I also had a problem with shipping. I had paid $7 in shipping when I ordered this item, I then got a postcard from the post office the shipping is due, apparently, the vendor did not pay the proper amount of shipping, so I had to pay an extra $7 to pick up the item. I emailed the vendor and they said they will reimburse me for the shipping, but I never saw the money.

The item did not work out and I ended up paying $11 to ship it back. The vendor refunded me the $$, less the shipping I paid and they didn't. So, I'm out $25 for shipping and the item was $24. It's not worth the hassle for me to get my $7 back. Will never order from these people again.

 "Portable IPod speaker" 2009-09-20
By N. Tuccillo (St Marys, GA)
The iM11 inMotion speakers are just what I was looking for. I teach classes and use music in them, and go from location to location. It's easy to travel with. It has more volume control which I needed. You do have to be careful not to hit the On/Off button after you have put it back in the carry case. I use the battery power and it does fine. The cord is a good back up if my batteries wear down.

 "Low quality sound" 2009-09-14

The sound is somewhat tingy and fairly low in quality. It does the job, however.

In the future, I will stick with higher quality sound systems.

"Small box, big sound, nice price - does most of what I need, but will not charge my iPod touch" 2009-09-11
By Nathan Andersen (Florida)
My wife and I bought this for a simple, inexpensive, portable, way to listen to the music on our iPods at home. We weren't looking for a booming stereo sound, and didn't expect a miracle in quality. We got exactly what we wanted. The sound is big enough and loud enough to fill a small room - probably not enough sound to run a house party, and certainly not enough to make the windows shake, but enough to give a bit of atmosphere and enjoyment. The bass, of course, is weak but for alternative and indie rock and pop, jazz and classical, which is mostly what we listen to, the sound is adequate and faithful. It's certainly beats the more tinny and less expansive sound we get from our MacBook Laptop.

You can power it with 4 AA batteries or a plug. It folds up neatly and fits nicely in an included pouch, and then you can press a button that opens up the iPod mount and a stabilizing base. It's a simple design, with just a power on/off button, a sliding volume switch, and the iPod mount. To adjust any of the levels or sound balance, you've got to use whatever controls are installed on your iPod. We've used this with an iPod nano (3rd generation), which it charges directly, and also with an iPod touch, which it won't charge, but will interface with to play music. A good, inexpensive, portable stereo player for your iPod.
