"It is what it is" 2009-09-25

Wanting music on the beach is a little tricky.

iPods and iPhones abound, but what sound system protects itself and the ipod and runs on batteries and is really as much sand proof as it is water resistant?

Frankly, there aren't too many options out there. There's the EGO ICE, but the sound quality isn't very good, especially if you're trying to send music over a relatively wide area for a couple of dozen people on a beach with tons of ambient sound.

This little speaker system is practically designed for the beach, and works well with iPods.

The sound quality is...well...not good, of course. But for what it is, it's not bad, and certainly better than the other options available (especially the EGO Ice, ugh, those are bad, no offense EGO), and gets decent volume without distortion to spread music over a wider area. Reasonable bass for what it is, but don't let that mislead you. This is not an audiophile's sound system. It's not as good a my Solid speakers, Logitech z2300, Sound Sticks, but it's better than my logitech mm22 speakers. They're just good enough on the beach or at a picnic or backyard for a small to medium party.

As a rugged, outdoor proof, highly portable sound system, it's great.

It does have a major major flaw though....Two in fact.

The first is that it doesn't fit iPhones. What what what?!?!?! When you're at a party, all the iphone users have music they'd love to share. Not many people walk around with ipods anymore (at least, not among my friends, sadly). So if this was compatible with iPhones, it would have been much better.

Secondly, you can't change playlists without opening the front panel. Boooooo! Still, if you have a playlist that everyone likes and that you don't need to change, it'll do.

"Bought it and love it" 2009-09-25

I was looking for a unit that would enable me to listen, aloud, to my ipod on the beach and other outdoor places. This unit is great. The sealed ipod dock is sturdy, great sound, and it is loud enough to hear over other noice. In other reviews I read comments about a shoulder strap being in pics but not offered with the product. Who cares...this unit is worth the cash you'll love it.

 "Works...sort of...with iPhone" 2009-09-13
By John Wikman (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA)
I looked for months for a device like this--a 'boombox' style outdoor radio, something that I could just toss out on the deck for barbecues and not worry if it got rained on or anything. Overall the device works GREAT. The one problem I have with it is that the bay for the iPod will _only_ hold the older-generation iPods. My iPhone or iPod Touch will dock in the thing and work okay, but you can't close the clear plastic door that allows you to leave it outside full-time. Not the end of the world, but that compatibility isn't listed nearly clearly enough.

 "Perfect for poolside listening" 2009-09-02

Very happy with this purchase! Works great to listen to the Ipod outside working in the yard or poolside. Sound is great and protects our Ipod from the elements (or pool...)

"Ruggidized Sound For Your iPod" 2009-08-31
By Nachtwaffen FranZ (Crofton, MD United States)
This thing gets pretty loud before you hear any distortion and the first place I used it was at a pool party. The sound changes when the iPod hatch is open. It sounds a little louder and lower like a bass reflex speaker when it's open since there are openings where the sound from inside the sealed housing can come out there. The control buttons on the front work well, but being rubberized take a firm push to work and you should press and hold them momentarily longer because they work the iPod in a delayed response, but you get used to it. One weird thing though with the battery compartment. I could not get this thing to work with batteries and was about to return it, when I noticed that the B+ contact wasn't touching the battery because of the plastic around it which I found very odd. I added a small shim behind the B+ contact plate and it worked just fine. I'm still baffled why it's made that way and can't be the only one who couldn't power it off of batteries. The little slot it has for a carrying handle is not very good especially if you're carrying a few things. I prefer having a handle that flips up and can get my hand around like my old boombox so I know I won't drop it.

This thing is what I would classify as "ruggidized". I work ruggidized electronic equipment for the military which is designed to take abuse or be submerged in water and this thing is built in a similar way with silicon gaskets that seal every opening, it's made of a durable plastic, and looks like it could take some abuse. The compartment where the iPod slots in is designed to hold the iPod snugly in place without leaving scratch marks on it's polished surface and it's probably the safest place you could keep your iPod! I said no to so many portable stereos because they leave your expensive iPod hanging out of a little slot exposed up on the top or the front of the unit where it could get damaged. I don't know if this thing could be submerged in water without leaking, but it looks like it could. As long as you have the iPod hatch shut on this this you could play it outside in the rain and not worry about it though.

Basically if you want something that sounds good and will work outside in more adverse environments and protect your iPod this is it.
