 "Important Note" 2009-10-03
By J. Lobrillo (Illinois)
I got this item for a long road trip and it performed perfectly until...

I plugged in my GPS and a portable DVD player. It shortly blew. When I say it blew I mean it got hot enough to melt the plastic inside the main male plug as well as the springs inside that hold the fuse was turned into a pool of melted metal. It was completely destroyed. Not to mention the smell of burning plastic lingering in the cabin of the car.

The lesson is that this unit can only handle a maximum load of 2.5 amps TOTAL. Before you buy check and make sure that the devices you are plugging into it do not exceed this rating. For me its the GPS thats the problem in drawing 2.1 amps by itself. I was ok at first because I was using it first with my GPS and the Scosche USB charger accessory which only draws .5 amps.

Overall I was satisfied with this product. I only wish they would have noted its maximum load rating in the product specs.

I got this one after my previous (and cheaper) one has blown the fuse of my car lighter. I needed 2 connections so I could keep my GPS and a charger (either iphone or my car bluetooth) connected.

The item works as advertised. The item I received do not match the picture, which result in me lowering the rating. I did prefer the look of the one showed here, but since it works just the same, I decided to keep it.

Used with a Jeep Grand Cherokee & with a Brunton Solaris 26 solar panel. Fits the socket well, supports the weight of 2 adapters plugged in, & has smooth edges. Doesn't have that cheap "made in China" feel (though it probably is) where seams don't close tight & plastic edges have burrs.

When purchased, it came with a promotional $5 amazon music download code. May buy another one for the other car.

"What 3rd Gen Shuffle should have been from the start" 2009-10-29
By Vincent Gillen (Sarasota, FL)
Simply turn the Shuffle on, insert into tapstick, and all operations are handled with ease. Buttons as big and easy to use. You can leave the Shuffle always on when it is in the tapstick, only needing to remove the iPod from the tapstick for syncing/charging. Also comes with a male to male cord so you can plug iPod into your car audio AUX jack. The cord is worth [...] itself. Great buy. Makes the 3rd gen Shuffle what it should have been from the start.

 "Perfect solution" 2009-10-18
By Jose Celso B. Coura (Brazil)
I was experiencing the same problem as many other iPod Shuffle 3rd Gen users: the controls stop working after some workout sessions. This is supposedly due to sweat entering the controls, which to me means "bad design". I started searching for an accessory to work around the problem and find the tapStick just when it had just been launched. I have already used it several times and yes, it works very fine. It is a very clever solution, of good finishing quality, and it preserves the original Shuffle 3G style. The only things I can say that it could additionally feature are the possibility to plug a second cable e a way to turn it on and off without dettaching it from the iPod.

"had to add RCA booster and Ground Loop Isolator" 2009-10-16
By Cory L. Johnston
I purchased the schosche FM-Mod02 FM Modulator to play audiobooks through my car radio with my Sansa Fuze. I had two problems with the modulator. First, The volume level was decreased by the modulator so that even with full volume on my Fuze my quieter Audio Books were hard to hear and I had to turn the volume on my radio way up. Second, I could not charge my fuze while listening because of a serious ground loop problem, as soon as I plugged power in all you would hear is a buzz. I ended up buying the Peripheral PLD10 10X RCA Signal Booster and installing it as well to get the volume level back up and get ground loop isolation. With the volume set correctly on the signal booster my mp3 player at 75% volume has higher volume than my normal radio stations. The ground loop problem completely went away and I can charge my player and listen to it at the same time with absolutely no sound loss. I absolutely love the modulator with the configuration I now have but it would have been nice if it had its own ground loop isolation and had a better volume output.

 "No instructions" 2009-09-21
By Joog (Washington, DC)
First, I want to emphasize that this came with absolutely NO INSTRUCTIONS. I realize that every car will have different panels and wiring to deal with, but some basic, general instructions would have been nice. I had to about an hour digging up install instructions for similar modulators and other car audio devices to figure out what I was supposed to do. A simple print out, or even instructions at the manufacturer's website, would have saved me a lot of time. That said, the product works well when installed. The audio quality is definitely better than that of an FM transmitter. If your car doesn't have have an MP3 jack, this devices gives you the most bang for the buck.

The modulator comes in two segments: One is a box that doesn't need to be accessed (although it does have a wired fuse close to it), so it can be placed out of site in a vacant cavity; the other is a combination switch and aux port that needs to be mounted where you can hit the switch and plug in a device. The hard part is finding a 12V line to tap into with the red wire and a ground line for the black. You may need to strip some of your stereo's wiring and splice into it. You then need to unplug the antenna cable from your head unit, move it to the female socket on your modulator's wire, and then plug in the modulator to the head unit's now free antenna jack. Now you just need to connect the switch to the modulator: pop the red and white stereo cables into the appropriate sockets and plug the switch's white power plug into the modulators white power harness.

Audio quality was generally good. I did notice some very high pitched humming, but this went away when I turned the stereo system down (to the levels I normally use it) and upped the source volume.

 "Great For The Price" 2009-09-06
By M. Andersen
The FM-MOD02 is a great solution to adding external/auxiliary input to a stereo system where other options are either expensive or complicated. Installation was simple but instructions would have been a big plus. If you are experienced with cars and car stereo installation it shouldn't be a problem but if you are not it might be problematic. Operation of the unit, once installed, is simple. Sound is good though not as good as auxiliary input built into a stereo. Best results seem to be achieved by turning volume low on the stereo and using the input device (ipod or other) volume control.

"Get This Modulator, Not A Plug In Transmitter" 2009-07-27
By J. Stepro (Southern Indiana)
For those, like myself, who want to play an iPod in their vehicle using the factory stereo there are two options: an FM transmitter (most likely a simple plug in device) or an FM modulator (that goes inline with the car antenna). I have 2 cars with factory in dash 6 CD changers and no way to input audio into the unit. This Scosche has been my solution to getting iPod audio into the system.

It is about an hour long job to slide out the stereo, figure out where to put the unit behind the dash, run the power and ground, and lastly place the switch and input. So, you or a friend have to be comfortable with sliding the radio out to do the work and be able to find the fuse box to tap into some power. However, it is well worth the time. No, it is not as easy as the plug kind, nor is its sound is not as pure as a true 30 pin iPod connector, but given that this is really the only option, it is good enough for me.

I am going to recommend getting some 3M heavy duty double stick tape to stick the gray box to the back side of the dashboard (or some other out of the way spot behind the dash). You can get this tape in most hardware stores or even WalMart or KMart. You will recognize the tape by its red peel-off backing.

Lastly, I am only giving this product 4 stars as one of the 3 units I bought failed after about 13 months. The others seem to be ok, but I could not give it 5 stars due to that fact. Beyond that, I love it!

"Cost effective solution for a new aux. input." 2009-06-23
By Jason A. Birkhead (Evansville, IN USA)
The price is just right for this piece of hardware. It plugs directly into the antenna input on the back of your stereo, and it still allows you to use your antenna. It does what it says it will do with the following 2 drawbacks.

1) It is not a crystal clear sound; you still end up with some static coming through your speakers.

2) You cannot turn your external device up all the way without a loss in audio quality.

The installation was very easy, but if you're one of those people who can't even change their own oil you would be better off taking it to someone else for installation.

All in all I am very happy I didn't have to buy a new stereo just to have an aux. input. Shipping was very fast as well (3 days) with the FREE shipping option through amazon.

 "Good concept, terrible construction" 2009-09-23
By M. Djuric
I was very hopeful for this adapter. I've been waiting for it for several months so I could use my Shure headphones with the 3rd Gen shuffle. Belkin came to market first with their own adapter, but since it cost $30 I still waited for the Scosche unit, mainly because I pre-ordered it already and it was a significantly lower price.

I finally got the unit about a week ago. I used it approximately three times: first time just looking at it out of the box, and the following two times for approximately half an hour. At the end of my third use, the front panel of the controller fell off without any force, impact, or manhandling on my part. I put the panel back on and it partially snapped back into place, but it was pretty much a lost cause since it kept falling off after being touched once or twice. The same happened to S. Hendricks, who commented on this problem in another user's 5-star review. I will upload a picture of the broken device at the conclusion of this review so you can take a look for yourself.

So here I am, still waiting for a decent adapter. Of course, Belkin's adapter is now out of stock, so I can't even order that one. It sucks that Apple made people buy an external adapter if they wanted to use a good pair of headphones, but it's even worse that a company can't their act together after announcing the adapter six months ago.

Aside from that (major) flaw, everything else about the adapter worked fine. It felt cheap when being held, but it raised/lowered volume and skipped/paused songs like a champ. As far as I could tell, it did not degrade the quality of the sound, and it was small and flexible enough so I could put it in my headphone carrying case. I would have kept it for a long time if it didn't fall apart in my hands.

 "A Qualified Thumbs Up" 2009-08-28
By A. Altman (San Carlos, California United States)
Most important: I am grateful to Scosche for producing this product so I can finally use the latest generation ipod shuffle with my favorites earphones (Westone)!

Pros

Sonically transparent

Easy to use once you learn the commands

Small

Does not increase size of the shuffle itself

Cons

Makes the earphone wire longer, and it's a little bit awkward.

Also, I had a little trouble with it after it sat in my gym bag in a hot car all day. Not sure if this is a sign of quality control problems (it was not THAT hot!).

Overall highly recommended.

Be sure to check out Scosche Tapstick also.

"Incompatible with 3GS and Scosche won't deal with them" 2009-09-21
By Sutha Kamal
I have a car from a manufacturer that scosche claims the device is compatible with, and have the iPhone 3GS that Scosche's website clearly lists as compatible. However, while this DOES allow my iPhone to charge, it causes a high-pitched whine that's very distracting whenever music is played... basically, it's useless when you actually want to listen to your iPhone.

After over a month of investigating, Scosche has no solution, and doesn't say anything other than "Our on-line application guide indicates that the iFWA adaptor will correct the issue of non-charging, but should also indicate the possibility of noise problems."

Really? The "on-line application guide"? Why not make it clear on the product page that this device causes an issue with the iPhone 3GS instead of listing it as a clearly supported device? Epic fail for Scosche. Disappointed I bought this instead of an alternate device. I'll have to give the Griffin device a try next.

 "Did not work" 2009-09-20
By J. Myles
4G Ipods are STRANGE. A Ipod tech told me that the pin configuration is different then other models, so many IPOD interfaces will not work with 4G Nano models. My wife's car sterio/phone/navagation system is set up for interface with an Ipod. She has a 4G, which is the only generation of Ipods that will not interface. The Scosche was purchased to correc the problem. Sadly the Scosche passPort did not work. The return service was excellent and without problem. I just wish it had worked. I had to give the product a low rating because it did not work as promised.

I was facing a problem with XCarLink iPod Interface that cannot operate my iPod Touch 2 Gen properly. I read so many threads on the net claiming that Apple change the level of voltage between old and new versions of ipod. Old versions support 12V like cars voltage but newer ones like my iPod Touch 2 Gen support 5V. Even though that Scosche passPORT adapter intended to resolve the voltage issue but it also fix the issue with my car iPod Interface. Now my iPod is working well with XCarLink iPod interface and charging as well. Glad to own it :)

This charger charges my iPhone 3GS without a problem. It is also compact and aesthetically appealing. I bought it so I could charge a multitude of USB-powered devices and it works for everything I've tried with the one exception:

A Garmin Nuvi cannot be charged from this device. The Garmin Nuvi thinks it's connected to the USB port of a computer and goes into a computer mode when plugged into this device. Technically, the Nuvi is charging but it can't be used in the meantime. This is most likely a shortcoming of the Garmin Nuvi than of this particular charger.

"Perfect Cable For AUX inputs in the car" 2009-09-05
By Jacob Hantla (Chandler, AZ United States)
This retractable cable is perfect for connecting ipods, phones, mp3 players, etc to the AUX input on a car. My middle console in the car tends to get super cluttered, so to have a cable which doesn't get tied into knots and make a mess is a huge plus.

The sound quality so far as I can discern is great with this cable.

The retractor mechanism can tend to get stuck, but has always quickly snapped back into place after I jiggle it for a second.

The cable is only 3 feet long, which is perfect for me, but depending on where your AUX input is may not be sufficient, so be aware of what you are buying.
