- OCT (Optimized Compression Topology)--The system utilizes a proprietary compression technology to ensure clean, accurate sound at high output levels.
- AEMS (Advanced Energy Management System)--The JBL On Stage Micro system has an automatic battery-saving shutoff. The AEMS will automatically put the system into sleep mode when there is no audio input. The system awakens with just a touch and resumes at the same volume level.
- Battery-powered--The JBL On Stage Micro loudspeaker dock is designed to use most types of AAA batteries. Four fresh AAA batteries allow up to 24 hours of continuous play at normal listening levels. An amber LED flashes when the battery protection circuit senses that the batteries are low. JBL encourages the use of rechargeable reduce waste and help the environment.

My wife uses this for playing her music on her IPod and recharging it. It is super stable and sturdy which is good considering we have pets and kids running around. The sound is amazing and it is hard to believe this is not a Bose considering how good it sounds. The dead give-away might be the heavy magnet in the speaker that also doubles as a well balanced weight. The quality is certainly there.

I use my JBL onstage micro every day and I am amazed at how long it will run on batteries. I'm also amazed at how good it sounds for it's size/price. This is really a great portable speaker, well-worth the price.

I had great hopes for this, but it fails on interfacing with a PC over USB.
My expectations were as follows. I'd like to:
A) Have a way to quickly dock my iPod Nano 3G and listen to music without a lot of hassle -- PASSED
B) Charge my iPod when I dock it overnight -- PASSED
C) Ability to interface with my stereo for room-filling sound when I choose to -- NOT TESTED YET
D) Easily sync with my PC -- FAILED!!!
So here's the deal...
SOUND
The sound from the two 1.5-inch speakers is great for 1.5-inch speakers, but poor otherwise. It hisses when on. It significantly distorts bass. It has a tin sound, almost like a loud speaker (the kind the cops use). This is NOT your Bose Wave!
INTERFACE
Good. It has a nice remote that replicates the functionality of the controls on an iPod (volume, next, previous, menu, select, etc.). You also have easy access to the shuttle wheel on the face of the iPod
USB CONNECTION
This is where this thing is HORRIBLE in design. So, as it turns out, the only way it connects to a PC is if its power cable is disconnected! If it has power, it won't sync with a PC. Without power, it will sync with a PC, but not play music. This makes it USELESS!!!
Also, the mini-USB connector is recessed into a small round hole. Mini-USB cables don't fit into the small round hole. It literally is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole -- no joke! I had to use a razor-sharp box cutter to whittle away the square corners of my USB connector to get it to fit.
If the price for this device was <$50, then I'd say it's a fair deal. But at $70-$100 for this, it is a waste of money! I usually don't give 1-star reviews unless I am really disappointed with a product... I am really disappointed with this thing.
I am returning it today and will keep shopping for something that actually works!

I have been SO pleased with this product. I have had it for a couple of years now, and have been so happy with it. I have hauled it various places - from travel, to work, to different areas of my home and have had nothing but good luck with it. I am VERY pleased with the sound quality. It is very easy to use, and actually I have pretty much given it to my mom who is in her 60s. She loves to play her ipod music throughout the house when she is by herself. Guess I'll have to get another one for me...

There may be some quality control issues based on previous comments and my own experience. The original unit had an issue with charging my iPods (3G nano and Touch Gen 2) so I had it exchanged and now the charging function works properly.
Sound quality is decent with a stronger bass than the Satechi that I also own. It sounds a little muddier while the Satechi sounds overly bright so let your personal tastes rule here. I tend to prefer the JBL for extended listening.
Advantages to JBL:
- Size, especially when every little bit counts for traveling (unit, power adapter, and remote control).
- Sound quality (to my ears).
- Audio out and USB ports.
Advatages to Satechi:
- Much less buzzing noise when the iPod is paused.
- Green power light blinks to indicate a remote command has been processed.
- Able to adjust the volume directly on the iPod.
- Handy (short) audio-in cord provided.
- Price!!
PS - Both originally ordered JBL and Satechi units had a defect and were exchanged (advantage to neither).
