"Good for everything but FM" 2009-09-29
By Oz
I've been using this for almost a month now, and as for playback from my iPhone, I love it. It has no problem controlling playback and the sound quality is awesome. The alarm clock features are nice (although I wish it had the ability to set days, not just time). The remote control works pretty well too. The screen is extremely hard to read at an angle. Make sure wherever you put this thing that it faces your bed directly, otherwise, you won't be able to see the time.

As for FM reception, in just 2 words - it sucks! Whoever the designer was at Logitech that though it would be a good idea to merge the antenna with the power cord should be canned. The power brick is an eyesore, and being the antenna, the only way to get even semi-decent FM reception is to place the brick on the table beside the unit. Don't even think about putting it on the floor or someplace out of sight, unless you don't mind not using FM. Unfortunately, the alarm tone is not enough to wake me, so I have to set it to FM and wake up to a poorly tuned station.

I'll probably end up modding it by wiring in an external antenna, replacing the one built into the power cord.

"Man, I want to love this Iphone alarm clock..." 2009-09-22
By Gregory S. Spencer (Atlanta, GA)
Overall, I do really like it. The form is nice, the size is appropriate, it's a heavy unit, the sound is good, but seems like it should be louder given the cost. That said, the controls are nice, and it's pretty simple to set up. My only gripe, and it's significant, is this:

It seems like the alarm is a bit sporadic in behavior. It seems if a calendar reminder pops up before the alarm, after waving your hand over it for snooze, it goes into snooze mode, but it doesn't actually go off again. Now, I'm a pretty light sleeper (thanks kids!), so it hasn't messed me up, but not sure I could totally rely on this. Now, that said, I haven't been to logitech's site, and I have upgraded to 3.1 Iphone software, and the latest Itunes software, and don't THINK it has happened since, but not positive. It just stinks not KNOWING if the alarm is going to go off again as it should. But overall, very pleased, love the way it slowly ramps the music up in the morning, the motion sensitive snooze, and the nice control functionality. But I had a heck of a time finding the "perfect" Iphone alarm clock radio, and it may not exist yet.

 "Excellent purchase!" 2009-09-18
By Mike T. Charboneau (San Diego)
I have been searching everywhere for weeks for an AM/FM alarm clock radio, Iphone 3GS compatible player and finally found it! No airplane mode annoyance. It has amazing features and fits perfectly on my nightstand (it is heavy for its small size). I have my Iphone 3GS in a leather case and it still fits in the cradle perfectly and charges easily. The location of the cradle is perfect when pressing the screen on my phone.I got mine for $130 with shipping. It just needs to be louder and I would of given it 5 stars and there is a very, very small static pop when you turn on the ipod feature. If another logitech model came out with serious speaker power I would definitly do the upgrade. Well worth the money!

"Quality speaker at a reasonable price." 2009-10-13
By J. Waller (Alaska)
I've had this unit for only about a week. I bought it mostly for the alarm clock and radio feature which so far works exactly as it is supposed to. The iPod dock works well also. The sound quality isn't great but not bad for a small unit. The motion sensor snooze alarm feature which some customers reported as not working right, works fine on mine so far. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

 "Great little MP3/iPOD stereo" 2009-10-10
By Jeff McClain
Was looking for something for my office to play music. The FM doesn't work, but that isn't the unit's fault, I'm in the center of a heavily shielded building. The music is very good, and the control of the iTouch is great. Intuitive, and just works. Love that it has audio input as well for other MP3 players and for my computer sound.

 "Perfect for IPhone 3GS" 2009-09-22
By Thabes (ID USA)
As with many of you, I had to look, and look and then look some more to find a docking station that supported the newest generation of IPhones. This one did the trick, with a few additional perks....

I use the Incipio Feather case on my IPhone, but also have the ifrogz case that's a bit thicker at the base. BOTH work without a dock converter/insert in this unit.

I also use the Sleepmaker waves app to fall asleep at night, and as long as you start it up manually first, it plays fine through this system.

Would be nice if the time display was a little larger for viewing across the room, but it works well enough that I'm happy.

 "Nice design, poor functionality." 2009-09-14
By John
I was sold on the design of this dock mainly because the ipods sits in a recessed dock and is somewhat protected. The LCD is very readable and isn't annoyingly bright at night. The biggest problem that I have is with the dock connector. It doesn't always seat properly when the correct dock is used. It will emit a high pitched squeal and/or not charge, but other functions work. Logitech has replaced it twice, but I still have similar problems. I don't trust it as an alarm either....

 "doesn't work with iPhone" 2009-09-05
By Luke Miller (Hillsboro, OR USA)
This product does not work correctly with the iPhone. If you set the alarm to wake using the iPhone it doesn't always work. Logitech conformed this. Don't buy if you are planning on using the alarm with and iPhone (and maybe an iPod touch).

Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus Omnidirectional Speaker Dock for iPod and iPhone

Buy Cheap Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus Omnidirectional Speaker Dock for iPod and iPhone

Buy Low Price From Here Now

Amazon.com Product Description -- Posted October 19, 2008 Get great sound throughout the room with Logitech's Pure-Fi Express Plus Speaker Dock for your iPod or iPhone. The Pure-Fi Express Plus features omnidirectional acoustic technology, which provides great sound at a more consistent level throughout the room. It also includes the ability to run on AC or battery power, which--along with an integrated handle--makes it easy to take your music from room to room. Other features include a clock with alarm, so you can rest assured that you’ll wake on time; and a wireless remote control that works from up to 30 feet (10 meters) away, and stores neatly in an integrated compartment. In all, it's a great way to dock, play, and charge your iPod or iPhone.

Logitech’s Omnidirectional Advantage: Make Any Spot in Your Room a Sweet Spot
You don't sit in one spot when you’re listening to music from your iPod. Shouldn’t your speakers produce great sound no matter where you are in your room? Most of today's speakers for the iPod are designed to deliver the highest-quality sound immediately in front of the speakers. If you move from what audiophiles call the sweet spot on the couch to the impromptu dance floor, the sound you hear can easily become distorted, and you might find yourself out of step.

The Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus omnidirectional speakers are designed to transmit sound more consistently over a wider range of space, so you never miss a beat--no matter where you are in the room.

Traditional Versus Omnidirectional Loudspeakers
Most speakers are designed to radiate sound in a fixed direction. As shown in Figure 1, traditional speakers optimize sound for a sweet spot located directly in front of the speakers. In other words, the sweet spot is limited to a constrained sound field that fans outward in one direction. If you’re outside the sweet spot, you’ll hear unbalanced sound due to loudspeaker directionality.

Logitech Audio Labs' omnidirectional speakers differ from traditional speakers. Designed to radiate sound more uniformly over a wider range of frequencies and angles, Logitech’s omnidirectional speakers create a broad sweet spot that is not dependent on a fixed listening position, as shown in Figure 2. The true hallmark of omnidirectional speakers, however, is the increased sound quality that comes from tonally balanced direct and reflected sound. The increased reverberant sound field also increases the sensation of spaciousness and listener envelopment. By designing loudspeakers to radiate sound more uniformly, Logitech delivers great sound to any spot in the room.

iPod/iPhone Speaker Dock
Lets you dock, play and charge your iPod or iPhone.
Omnidirectional Acoustic Technology
Normal stereo desktop speakers deliver sound from discrete sound locations, making a more focused sweet spot. Logitech’s omnidirectional speakers transmit sound consistently across the room and create a much larger sweet spot, allowing for great sound anywhere in the room.
Portable Player
Plugs in or runs on batteries, so you can take your music from room to room. Integrated handle included.
Clock with Alarm
Helps you rest assured that you'll wake on time.
Wireless Remote Control
Gives you control from up to 30 feet (10 meters) away, and it stores neatly in an integrated compartment.

"Visually pleasing, easy to use, Ipod alarm dock" 2009-09-27
By Catman (Salt Lake City, UT USA)
Nice pleasing, minimalist design. Single large knob which functions as on/off, volume, and snooze button. Amber clock display is about one inch tall. There are three small buttons for setting the clock and built in beeping alarm. By setting the alarm function on your Ipod, you can wake to your favorite song, playlist, video, etc. Sound quality is pleasingly balanced with rolled off high and low frequencies. The unit is powered from AC or AA batteries which also serves as backup when you have a power outage. Remote gives you on/off, play/pause, volume, next/prev track, FF/FR, repeat, and shuffle functions. There is a storage for the remote in back of the unit. I have a 20g 4G Ipod attached and it wakes me up every morning to a different song.

"Logitech - Decent Sound, Insufficient Features, Below-Average Value" 2009-09-24
By Mark (East Coast)
The Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus is a good basic unit for those who want a speaker dock for their iPod or iPhone. The main positives of the unit are its compact size and clear sound. The omni-directional speaker design is well equipped to fill a small room. Even near the top end of the volume range it will not distort as much as other units in this price range. However, the main negatives are the relative lack of features. This unit is bare-bones as compared to others on the market. The mix of features and performance are a blend of entry level and mid-level but this unit is priced much higher than entry level units from iHome and others, including ones with more features. Users will have to decide if the Logitech brand and omni-directional speakers are worth the premium for them.

PROS

+ Compact size for bed-stand, shelf or desk use

+ Integrated one-piece design includes remote storage built into back of the unit

+ Omni-directional speaker sound fills a nice area when positioned properly

+ Bright orange clock display is more readable than those on other units I own

+ Graduating alarm clock slowly gets louder

+ Includes basic remote functions for power, volume, skip, forward, rewind, play and pause

+ Storage area for remote built into back of unit so you won't worry about losing your remote

+ Line-in port allows you to connect a PC or other Mp3 players, such as Sony, Creative or Zune, via auxiliary cable

+ Dock charges and plays a wide variety of iPods with the proper adapter (several standard ones are included)

+ Black body and orange lighted controls will look attractive to many

CONS

- Fewer features than similarly priced units by Logitech, Altec Lansing, iHome and others

- The sound is clear, but lacks the depth of higher end systems, though it did improve over time

- Alarm is buzzer only with no option for iPod music alarm (possibly could be updated)

- No outputs of any kind for hooking up to other equipment (RCA, USB, etc.)

- Only one (line-in) input, limiting the device's flexibility

- Remote functions don't let you navigate iPod menus

- No AM/FM radio within the device

- Poorly designed for mobile use - speaker fabric feels vulnerable to damage in transit

- Portable use also requires 6 AA batteries, making re-chargeable ones almost a necessity

- No included carrying case for portable use

THE ALTERNATIVES

For those who really want the omni-directional speakers, this unit may be worth the price tag and the missing features. Many people probably fall outside of that category.

The alarm feature is a curious and inadequate feature considering the ones that were left out. Both the Logitech Pure-Fi Dream Speaker and the Pure-Fi Anytime Premium Alarm Clock function better as alarm clocks and each include more features, such as an AM/FM radio. While the Dream is more expensive, the Anytime is priced comparably. The speakers are not omni-directional, so they do not fill a room in the same way. But considering the mid-range pricing, most people would probably prefer the extra features over the slightly more expansive sound.

As a desk dock, even the Etón Sound 100 iPod Dock is probably superior to this for certain uses. The remote included with that radio allows full iPod navigation. It doesn't come close in terms of sound quality since it is monaural. But is loaded with features and much more compact.

Docks such as the iLuv i177 Alarm Clock also deserve consideration from those who need a lower price tag for more features. For those willing to spend a little more, there are many alternatives worth paying a premium depending on the intended use. As a general iPod dock, this unit has enough positive traits that it should still be in the running.

CONCLUSION

If you need a speaker dock for a medium sized room and plan on relying on your iPod to drive it, you can do a lot worse than this. But this is not the best value out there and even in terms of performance there are others that may be better for your needs. This unit is a sort of jack-of-all trades. Even though it is OK, it is not ideal for portability, features, or as a clock radio. You can probably find a unit better suited to the use that matters most to you f you explore the docks that are superior in each of those categories.

Review your options and test it out at retail outlets if possible. But as long as the missing features are less important to you, you may still like this dock.

Enjoy.

"Easy to Set Alarm Time -- It's a Alarm Clock Not a HiFi System" 2009-09-19
By Epicure (NY)
As I am typing this, I am playing my first song in my home. I read reviews and looked at specs and had no idea which iPhone compatible alarm clock I wanted to use with my 3Gs. Then, I went to a brick and mortar store and they had them all there to try. As my wakeup time changes from day to day, with no set schedule for weekends and weekdays..I need to be able to adjust my alarm time easily. Everyone else had some silly system of switching times with plusses and minuses or jog dials designed to mimic the original iPods. Here its press the alarm button until the alarm time blinks, select hour, press again, select minutes. Fast, easy, and possible to do when you are tired and just want to collapse. As an alarm clock, that functionality beats every other system out there.

Sound -- it sounds ok. Better than my MacBook Pro speakers, but worse than my separate component system with dedicated amp, processor, etc.. etc... where no single component is anywhere near the cost of the Pure-Fi. So setting the expectation that this is a clock-"radio" -- it is excellent. For $80 -- it does what it should and to be honest -- I was surprised that the sound is as good as it is.

I will follow up later with more as it comes!

Sounds good, pretty compact, clock is easily visible. Came with a adapter plate for my 4th gen Ipod nano. Comes installed with a adapter plate which must be removed 1st if installing a different one. Will recharge your Ipod only if its plugged in and not on battery power. Logitech always makes great products. Very pleased.
