Which Dock Is for You?
JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are:

For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies
The iPhone owner--if you can stand to put the thing down--has a couple choices. The On Stage IIIP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the On Stage 200ID gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well.

For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers
Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons, more lights. Others just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. If this is you, then the On Time 200ID and 400IHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). Of course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The On Time 400IHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen.

Something for Everyone
All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge iPod even when not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL.

Compatibility
The JBL On Stage Micro system is compatible with all docking versions of the iPod, including the nano, photo, and video iPod. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices, such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radio, and laptops. Specific dockable iPod compatibility: iPod mini 1G; iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G; iPod 3G, 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G; iPod touch.

Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls
Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, you can browse iPod songs, photos, and playlists; change tracks and settings; and much more. With the JBL On Stage Micro IR remote, you have complete control of your iPod, as if it were in your hand.

Connection Versatility
The JBL On Stage Micro loudspeaker dock is a multimedia focal point. Enjoy your iPod, view photos or videos, and listen to virtually any other auxiliary audio component, all through the JBL On Stage Micro system. Connect the USB cable to your computer for full iPod and iTunes compatibility.

Additional Features

  • IR remote--The JBL On Stage Micro IR remote has several modes of operation. The Music mode allows you to control the volume, change tracks, fast forward, and fast reverse. The iPod Navigation mode allows you to navigate the iPod menus just as if you were touching the iPod itself. You can navigate your music, watch your slideshows, and find and play your videos.
  • OnePoint design--The OnePoint iPod connectors provide the connection to your computer. Connect the USB cable to the rear of the unit; then, every time you dock your iPod, you will have a connection for synchronizing and charging.
  • Evercharge topology--The JBL On Stage Micro system provides power to charge your iPod, even when not connected to the computer or if the system is off.

Advanced Technology
The JBL On Stage Micro loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest quality sound, astonishing bass, and clear and accurate sound from any direction.

  • Odyssey transducers--The Odyssey drivers provide accurate high frequencies while capable of low-frequency extension of four octaves, unlike traditional powered tweeters. This design provides a full, rich frequency response from low bass to the highest highs.
  • Slipstream port design--The JBL On Stage Micro port minimizes boundary layer separation, providing high-output bass with low distortion.
  • COE (Computer-Optimized Equalization)--The JBL On Stage Micro system equalization is computer-optimized to provide a rich, complete soundstage over a range of listening positions.
  • OCT (Optimized Compression Topology)--The system utilizes a proprietary compression technology to ensure clean, accurate sound at high output levels.
  • AEMS (Advanced Energy Management System)--The JBL On Stage Micro system has an automatic battery-saving shutoff. The AEMS will automatically put the system into sleep mode when there is no audio input. The system awakens with just a touch and resumes at the same volume level.
  • Battery-powered--The JBL On Stage Micro loudspeaker dock is designed to use most types of AAA batteries. Four fresh AAA batteries allow up to 24 hours of continuous play at normal listening levels. An amber LED flashes when the battery protection circuit senses that the batteries are low. JBL encourages the use of rechargeable reduce waste and help the environment.

 "Portable and sturdy" 2009-10-21
By Richard V. Mullen
My wife uses this for playing her music on her IPod and recharging it. It is super stable and sturdy which is good considering we have pets and kids running around. The sound is amazing and it is hard to believe this is not a Bose considering how good it sounds. The dead give-away might be the heavy magnet in the speaker that also doubles as a well balanced weight. The quality is certainly there.

I use my JBL onstage micro every day and I am amazed at how long it will run on batteries. I'm also amazed at how good it sounds for it's size/price. This is really a great portable speaker, well-worth the price.

 "Flawed design!" 2009-10-18
By X_HOBBES (NJ, USA)
I had great hopes for this, but it fails on interfacing with a PC over USB.

My expectations were as follows. I'd like to:

A) Have a way to quickly dock my iPod Nano 3G and listen to music without a lot of hassle -- PASSED

B) Charge my iPod when I dock it overnight -- PASSED

C) Ability to interface with my stereo for room-filling sound when I choose to -- NOT TESTED YET

D) Easily sync with my PC -- FAILED!!!

So here's the deal...

SOUND

The sound from the two 1.5-inch speakers is great for 1.5-inch speakers, but poor otherwise. It hisses when on. It significantly distorts bass. It has a tin sound, almost like a loud speaker (the kind the cops use). This is NOT your Bose Wave!

INTERFACE

Good. It has a nice remote that replicates the functionality of the controls on an iPod (volume, next, previous, menu, select, etc.). You also have easy access to the shuttle wheel on the face of the iPod

USB CONNECTION

This is where this thing is HORRIBLE in design. So, as it turns out, the only way it connects to a PC is if its power cable is disconnected! If it has power, it won't sync with a PC. Without power, it will sync with a PC, but not play music. This makes it USELESS!!!

Also, the mini-USB connector is recessed into a small round hole. Mini-USB cables don't fit into the small round hole. It literally is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole -- no joke! I had to use a razor-sharp box cutter to whittle away the square corners of my USB connector to get it to fit.

If the price for this device was <$50, then I'd say it's a fair deal. But at $70-$100 for this, it is a waste of money! I usually don't give 1-star reviews unless I am really disappointed with a product... I am really disappointed with this thing.

I am returning it today and will keep shopping for something that actually works!

"Great bang for the buck" 2009-10-11
By Audrey W (New Braunfels, TX)
I have been SO pleased with this product. I have had it for a couple of years now, and have been so happy with it. I have hauled it various places - from travel, to work, to different areas of my home and have had nothing but good luck with it. I am VERY pleased with the sound quality. It is very easy to use, and actually I have pretty much given it to my mom who is in her 60s. She loves to play her ipod music throughout the house when she is by herself. Guess I'll have to get another one for me...

"JBL Micro Portable versus Satechi" 2009-09-23
By Plzensky
There may be some quality control issues based on previous comments and my own experience. The original unit had an issue with charging my iPods (3G nano and Touch Gen 2) so I had it exchanged and now the charging function works properly.

Sound quality is decent with a stronger bass than the Satechi that I also own. It sounds a little muddier while the Satechi sounds overly bright so let your personal tastes rule here. I tend to prefer the JBL for extended listening.

Advantages to JBL:

- Size, especially when every little bit counts for traveling (unit, power adapter, and remote control).

- Sound quality (to my ears).

- Audio out and USB ports.

Advatages to Satechi:

- Much less buzzing noise when the iPod is paused.

- Green power light blinks to indicate a remote command has been processed.

- Able to adjust the volume directly on the iPod.

- Handy (short) audio-in cord provided.

- Price!!

PS - Both originally ordered JBL and Satechi units had a defect and were exchanged (advantage to neither).

 "Amazing sound and portability" 2009-10-22
By Jared Howell (Phoenix, AZ)
I am a Bose fan, and most speakers pale in comparison. I am now a JBL fan as well. The sound is simply fantastic. It goes out in all directions, and can easily fill a large room. It is very portable, and works just as well on batteries as it does with the cord. I can't believe how much I use this product, I reach for it before some of my built in speakers, and even Bose Wave Radio in the bedroom, this just sounds so good.

The sound is clear and crisp, with great range. Works wonderful with my iPhone, and as a speaker for any of my laptops. It is surprisingly small for the quality of sound it produces, and because it pushes sound out in every direction, the sound fills the area/room very nicely.

I have heard and played with many other portable speakers for iPods/iPhones, and I find most to be very tinny sounding, and quit a bit of distortion. Plus they push sound out in only one direction, which causes more distortion at louder volumes and larger rooms or outside. This is simply the best speakers I have heard, I think I even prefer them to the Bose sound dock! I would definitely buy these before a Bose Sound Dock. The size, portability, and quality is absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend purchasing these speakers, you will not be disappointed.

"Best sound from small speakers!" 2009-10-21
By gnarlynan (arizona)
This JBL has the best sound ever. I had an earlier model too and loved it although it wasn't compatible with my new iTouch. It has ease for transport and I love that I can lie in bed and use the remote to increase/decrease volume. The remote also manages the iPod menu. etc. Love it!

By J. Schmidt (FL)
I've always liked JBL products and this as the others I've owned does not dissapoint. Great sound quality overall. Louder than I thought it would be. No difference between pluged into a wall or useing batteries. Very convienient for the beach or any outing. Small enough to fit into a handbag type coach purse. I have no disslikes about it.

"Big on features, but also big on price" 2009-08-17
By Jack
I just purchased this speaker dock for my new iPhone 3GS, and I love it. It works perfectly. The sound is great; there's no need for a special adapter (like another user said there was); there is ZERO feedback/interference heard (which is huge for me and the reason I returned a different product by a different manufacturer); it's compact/portable; and it charges your phone for you while you listen to music! What more can you ask for??

Well, the one thing I would ask for is a lower price. In fact, having to pay $133.99 for this unit was the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. I'd actually rate the unit itself as a five star unit and the price a one star. It's just too expensive. But unfortunately, I couldn't find another (cheaper) product that has all the features that I wanted like this one does. And this one sure did live up to it's promises.

Ultimately, I'd buy it again.

 "Good but pricey" 2009-07-06
By Jason Bradley
This docking station works great with my iPhone 3G and iPod nano. The sound quality is good and fills the room. It doesn't produce much bass but I wouldn't really expect it to only having small tweeters for speakers. The remote control works fine with docking station but you have to be close enough to read your iPod/iPhone not having a display. For the price I would expect a sub woofer or at least an easy to read display.

By Anjan Michael Vincent (Dearborn, MI USA)
The speakers reached me in good time, in good shape and well packaged. I was very anxious to find out if they would be afflicted with the dreaded "buzzing" that people here have complained about, but thankfully, no such issues at all... let's hope that this is one quality defect that JBL have learnt of and fixed by design.

The sound quality is more than what I would normally expect from 2 tiny speakers such as these, and even though i'm not obsessed with bass... it does a good job all the same. More than sufficient for filling up a small room, and the reproduction of sound is nothing you would complain about.

They look good, they sound good and I think I bought it at a fair price, so there we go!

"All I can say is, meh." 2009-10-15
By Steve Swanson (Earth)
Pros

- Inexpensive (at least at Amazon)

- Stylish looking (especially if you have an aluminum Mac)

- Decent sound

Cons

- The volume knob. Sweet mother of pearl, that thing is HARD to turn! It isn't that it's stiff, it's that it's slippery and doesn't provide enough grip. You can't turn it off without using both hands, and even turning it up and down isn't as simple as it should be. Very poor design on JBL's part.

- I was not familiar with the concept of shielding, but I get what people are talking about now. These speakers snap crackle and pop any time my cellphone is near it. I didn't have this problem when I was on Sprint, but it sure as has heck does it now that I'm on AT&T.

I got these speakers because I wanted them to match my desktop setup (I know, I know, but I'm a designer so it was important to me) and because they supposedly sounded good. They sound good enough for the money, but when you factor in that they aren't shielded, yikes. Not a good thing. If you aren't on AT&T and you can find these speakers on the cheap, then I'd suggest putting them in your short list. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

 "Best computer speakers out!" 2009-10-11
By Costa Manos (Texas, USA)
I've been looking for a quality pair of computer speakers for quite some time now. After reading about the JBL speakers, and going by the reviews, I decided to buy the speakers without ever hearing them. It's true!!! These speakers produce a full bodied, well mixed, and totally satisfying sound generated directly from my computer. The sound coming out of these small but elegant speakers blow other high value, high profile speakers out of the water. The comments others made about using two hands to turn the volume control knob are true. However, it takes so little energy and effort this should not even be a consideration. Don't wait... buy a pair. You won't be disappointed.

These speakers are really great. The price is right and they look high quality. But most importantly the sound is excellent. They sound like a high end audio system. Crisp highs. Deep and smooth base. Very rich overall sound. My only gripe is that they dont come in black and the volume dial is too stiff.

"Work great for the first 6 months (review based on 2 purchases)" 2009-10-05
By LD
When they work they work great. Full sound, way way better than the build in speakers. After about 6 months I started to have to tweak with the audio cable because only 1 speaker was working. The tweaking started to be needed more often until it stopped working and I could hear sound only from 1 speaker. So I bought a new pair of speakers hoping that I just got a defective pair (and also because they are so inexpensive). After the first 6 months when they worked great now I have to tweak again with the cable because they stop working (this time both of them, even more annoying, especially when I am far from the laptop cooking and sentences get cut in the middle of my listening). It is not a problem with my laptop because when I use headset I never have issues.

Now I am shopping for a new pair, no I will not buy these for the third time.

And that's my only gripe. I too got the impression of, "Oh cool! Aluminum case! That's great!" Nope, it's just the color.

I was replacing a two year old set of speakers (Logitech X-540) and opted to give these a try. I don't do gaming anymore; just listening to music.

Whoa. These things are FANTASTIC regarding sound quality! I had read others' reviews and was skeptical, but their output - from the highest treble to the lowest bass - comes through crystal clear.
