They simply will not stay in my ears. Period. Cannot believe APPLE would associate such a poorly designed product with their IPOD TOUCH.

 "It works!" 2009-10-17
By Juergen E. Lorenz (South Jersey, USA)
The adapter works well, but it does not fit my needs. I needed a mic to insert between my 1st gen iPod touch and my noise-reducing (non-Apple) ear buds. The setup is working, but the resulting cord tangle is just too long, and the mic needs to be clipped to something near my mouth. Until I find better quality earbuds with built-in mic, I'll have to settle for the Apple buds that do not stay in my ears.

"Works great, but totally rubbish quality" 2009-09-27
By JC Looijesteijn (The Netherlands)
As long as it works, it's as good as it gets, it looks and feels good, easy control, nicely clicking button.

Although I had read several negative reviews on the build quality, I gave it a try. Within a week the cable kink issue showed up and I had no sound coming from my right earbud any more.

Besides, the chromium on the plug got loose, making the sound volume for the left earbud change with the rotation of the plug.

So: not worth spending any money on until they come up with a better plug.

"Should have listened to the naysayers" 2009-08-31
By Anthony S. Zorn (San Salvador, El Salvador)
Well, I saw the reviews that complained about the durability (or lack thereof) of this item. However it has been my experience that many people complaining about durability are really abusing their products. I discovered that this was not the case this time...mine lasted about four months before going intermittant.

What a shame because it had worked very well up to that point. The system for pausing, skipping forward and back worked fairly well (skipping back was tough to master), the cable was the right length, I had no problems with volume and intelligibility with the mic. In all a good performing unit.

But I do treat my things VERY carefully, headphones, etc. last longer in my care than with most people, this died rather eaily. so be careful, I am going to try the monster cable version of this item to see if that lasts longer.

"Useful, but could be improved" 2009-07-20
By D. Cipolla (Philadelphia, PA)
The SmartTalk is definitely a good addition to an iPod touch, which unfortunately still lacks a microphone. The button on the SmartTalk works as promised, and the microphone quality is quite good. Voice Memos in OS 3.0 sound excellent, and Skype works great too.

On the downside, for most headphones with a normal-length cable, adding the SmartTalk makes the headphone cable too long. Having a 5 - 6 foot long headphone cable gets to be a pain, especially while walking around or taking the train, etc. I've yet to find an effective way to deal with the long cable. On other headphones with long cables, I coil up the part of the cable closest to the headphone jack of the iPod. But with the SmartTalk, because the microphone jack is on the end of the cable towards the device, if you coil up that end of that cable, the microphone gets to be too far away from you to pick up what you're saying. Coiling up the part of the cable closer to the headphones looks awkward and everything gets tangled.

As other reviewers have commented, the plug also has some problems. If it gets bumped or turned in the headphone jack -- which happens a lot when your iPod/iPhone is in your pocket -- the music can unexpectedly pause, or start playing again. It gets extremely annoying after a while.

If you need a mic for your iPod touch, or want to use your own headphones with your iPod, the SmartTalk is useful, but you probably shouldn't plan on having it attached to your device all the time.

Non powered means unlike blutooth options they are always ready to go.

Mic works well and very cost effective.

"wish they offered a shorter version" 2009-10-15
By A. Boyer (Atlanta, GA USA)
Works as promised, but I use it to connect my ipod to my factory car stereo (connectors are under the armrest) so the 6 foot length is overkill. Wish it was offered in 2 or 3 foot length.

Very reasonable product and shipping cost!!!

 "Cable works fine" 2009-08-29

Got cable to connect stereo with an mp3 like device. Works fine and received promptly.

"Prompt shipping, and it works." 2009-08-28
By another shopper (Nashville, TN)
The cable arrived quickly via U.S. mail, and it works. Hooray! I used mine to connect the audio line out from a netbook to a TV, and it works great so far.

Now some initial observations.

For those who care about such things, the RCA connectors on the cable I received were black and red, not white and red, so I've posted a photo. I just plugged the red cable connector into the red socket, and the black cable connector into the white socket, and it's good to go.

How long is a 6-foot cable supposed to be? If you measure the one I got from the tip of the stereo plug to the tips of the RCA connectors, it's 6 feet 2.5 inches long; but if you measure just the unmolded section of cord, that's 5 feet 10.5 inches long.

The metal of all the connectors isn't gold plated; instead it's a silver color with a mirror finish. My guess is that it's a bright nickel plating over some base metal. FWIW, the connectors were not magnetic. There's a tan insulator between the center pin and outer sleeve of the RCA connectors that appears to be phenolic. All connectors were molded onto the wires, and included 5/8" of strain relief where the wires enter the connector.

The wire has two separately-insulated parts that are joined and run in parallel except for perhaps the last three inches at the RCA connectors, where the wire is split with each half going to a separate RCA connector. If the RCA connectors were pulled further apart, it seems the twinned wires would easily separate, allowing the RCA connectors to be positioned further apart.

The country of origin isn't indicated on the cable, and there was no individual unit packaging such as thermoformed plastic or a baggie.

I haven't had the product long enough to comment on long-term reliability.

In summary, the cable works, it's cheap, shipping was a bargain, and it arrived promptly. So far, I'm satisfied.

Not much to say other than that the cable does what it's supposed to and seems to be good quality. I use it with a video cable to connect a MacBook to a plasma tv.

 "Rockin' in the water" 2009-10-13

"Great for relieving the monotony of lap swimming" 2009-10-06
By S. Lee (Providence, RI United States)
I chose this product firstly because it was the most economical to buy this together with the iPod Shuffle, as opposed to spending $70 for the case and then another $60 or so for the headphones. Also, in case the case fails and leaks (which it hasn't), I won't be heart-broken to lose a $45 shuffle vs. my 8G Nano which I use for all my other iPod needs. After using it, I also recommend this system because it clips to the back of your goggle straps, which makes it the most non-obtrusive system I've seen for any exercise. I wish I could have a similar setup for when I go running. The only problem I've had with it is that the earphone tends to fall out of my left ear. I might need to change the earplug size (multiple sizes included). Altogether I am extremely satisfied with this product.

 "Helped me learn swimming!" 2009-10-05
By Smart cookie (USA)
I have struggled to learn swimming on and off for many years - but I was stuck with "I can float but cant swim". Being able to take my ipod into the pool made me stay in the water and enjoy myself and before I knew it - I was swimming! It also keeps the water out of your ears and make it easy for beginners like me :)

 "Terrible" 2009-09-30
By L Wang (Houston)
Pros: none

Cons:

1. Cheaply and poorly built. I paid 69.99 for a maybe $5 product

2. Does not fit. I tried all five sizes ear plugs in every which possible ways. None of them were comfortable and the ear plugs fall out regardless.

3. The 30-lap swim with this product turns into a stop and go freaky show.

"Swim under the stars to the music you love" 2009-09-23
By CROCKS (Tucson, Arizona)
I just returned from working out at our neighborhood pool - only person in the pool this evening. Did my workout, including stretching, fitness, floating, swimming under a sky full of stars to the music of Celine Dion (among others). It was AWESOME! Adding music to the already fluid movement of the water creates MAGIC. I received this unit for my BD a few days ago - have used it three times so far with great satisfaction. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The only challenge was the 2nd generation Shuffle it fits is hard to find now (I didn't already have one). I actually got a used one from a friend - all the local stores now are into 4th generation. But perserverance won out and it was well worth the wait! Swim, dance, float on my friends. This product is GREAT!

"Plastic, cheap... get what you paid for." 2009-07-14
By Angey Engbring (Madison, WI USA)
I thought they were the iPod headphones but was mistaken. These were really flimsy and made out of that cheap plastic that is really annoying. I don't know how to discribe it. My friend found a pair of ACTUAL iPod headphones in her house and didn't know where they came from because she's enver owned an iPod, so she traded me the cheap-o's I bought off Amazon for them. So hey... not gonna complain. I got what I wanted in the end. Haha. I got what I paid for them. They worked like iPod headphones... falling out when you turned your head... putting music into your ear like every other in-ear headphone on the market.

I ordered these as a backup pair of headphones. After trying them on for about an hour only one side worked. About 40 minutes after the sound lagged and the I could hardly hear music... O well, really cheap anyways. Still a waste of 3 dollars, save your money and go buy a pizza.
