 "not happy-False advertising-not Apple product" 2010-04-03

By Angela Baker (Rothschild, WI USA)

First of all the cable they sent is a cheap generic cable that doesn't work properly. It does not look anything like the image, and it is not an Apple product. This product page is misleading and should be modified to correctly describe the product this company is selling (i.e. a non-Apple, third party cable),I tried plugging in my iPhone 3G and it just keep beeping, like it is not compatible? I can't even use it to charge it, let alone sink my phone. This product was useless to me. I only got it because I thought it was the apple cord like the one I have and it is not do not get it.

I have a 3GS and this cable works perfectly. It charges the phone and also allows for syncing the same as the original cable that came with my phone. I bought two so now I have a cable I keep at work and one for traveling. Can't beat this deal.

The dock connectors are better than the one you get from Apple when you get an Iphone or Ipod.....much more durable. Very good. Would definitely recommend.

"Less Clutter - Fewer Chords" 2009-10-23
By J. Gerard
The Griffin Simplifi Dock is a great addition to my iMac. The Simplifi replaced my card reader, iPod dock and my USB hub. Since these three devices took all three of the USB ports on the back of the iMac, I needed the hub to add other peripherals, Wacom Tablet, Keyboard and the occasional USB memory stick.

Since the Simplifi only takes one port, I was able to remove the other devices and all of their cables & power chords. Now my desk has a much cleaner look and feel with only one device sitting right next to the monitor. I have room for the peripherals I like to leave connected at all times and I have two additional ports on the back of the Simplifi hub.

Some of the less favorable review comment on the lack of charging when the computer is not on, but my apple universal dock did not charge any of my iPods unless the computer was on. The power chord is for providing power to the USB peripherals that require more power, it may have been a nice addition to have iPod charging capability when the computer is off, but this is not a deal breaker because I usually want to charge and synch at the same time. For what it's worth, it does continue to charge when the iMac goes to sleep.

"Great desktop organizer, with a few flaws." 2009-09-30
By Joseph Ballow (Boston, MA)
Having just moved into a collage dorm, my desk is a bit more cramped than before. I bought this dock to organize a few usb cables, as well as dock my iphone.

-The SD card slot and usb hub works great. There are blue leds on each port that light up when connected, but they are dim so you can sleep with them on unlike certain products that light up the room. I have not yet tried other types of memory cards with the dock.

-The included usb cord is very short. For me this is a plus, as the cord just goes from the far side of my laptop to where I want the dock. It is made for laptops I would say, as I doubt a desktop positioned under the desk would have a chance of reaching. It would be easy to use a longer cord, but another reviewer claims to have problems with this.

-The iphone dock works fine for charging and syncing. Before I would go a week without syncing, but now I sync the phone every time I sit down at the desk. These intermittent charges also make the battery last a little longer.

-The major flaws with the product involve ease of use. The dock is lighter then I would have hoped, and although the bottom is a rubbery pad, it seems to have no anti-skid properties. This means docking the phone or using a memory card almost always requires two hands. Even using the touch screen while the phone is in the dock will cause it to slide. This wouldn't be a huge problem, except that I dock the phone 10+ times a day.

-Also, of the many included dock adapters, none fit fit my iphone 3gs well. This means a little fiddling each time to line the connector up, which would happen automatically if the adapter fit better.

Overall, this dock is very useful and goes a long way to reducing desktop clutter. Although not perfect it still seems to me to be one of the best available. I would gladly purchase the dock again.

"Lights are on, but no iPhone recognized." 2009-08-13
By ERNEST
Not much to say. I used the enclosed cables and power supply. I plugged everything in and the light on the dock came on immediately. But when I put my iPhone in the dock, it did not charge or connect. I restarted my computer a few times trying to figure out why my iPhone was not charging. Then just before repacking the unit to return, the USB connection was recognized! (USB Voodoo?).

And remember, charging power comes from the USB cable, not the wall-plug-in power supply. The wall-plug power is used to support the other dock functions (2 back USB ports and card readers).

Other drawback...No inserts to accommodate Griffin slim iPhone case.

Good Luck!

 "Minimal functionality" 2009-08-13
By gadgetmaster (Austin, TX United States)
If you looking for a way to leave your laptop at home while on vacation with your DSLR, this is NOT it.

Incapable of functioning as card reader for iPhone. Memory cards' files must go through computer first.

Incapable of charging docked iPhone without a powered USB connection to a powered on computer. Will not charge iPhone using supplied AC wall wart adapter. Will not charge with USB plugged into Apple AC to USB wall wart that comes as stock accessory with iPhone 3Gs.

Did manage to read a 266x Transcend CF card at 26 MB/sec into Macbook Pro laptop. But as a card reader this thing is large and heavy.

By Bradley Crandall (Illinois, United States)
This is the perfect companion to a computer (especially a Mac) that doesn't have a built-in memory card reader. The reader functions beautifully, and the iPod dock works like a charm. I haven't tried out the USB dock, so I don't want to pass judgement on it. This is a great looking device that does its job perfectly, and was a great deal on top of it all ($43 vs. $69 at the Apple Store).

"Great Sound but not a bedroom alarm clock" 2009-10-20
By P. Leon (Washington, DC United States)
Bought this so we could listen to NPR in the morning - recent changes in the DC radio stations started causing interference. Out of the box the radio is easy to set up and it found HD stations with the FM attena attached very well. However, the clock was so bright, even on the lowest dimmer setting, that it lit up the room - we eventually put a book in front of it so we could sleep. Also, it has no snooze button and only one alarm - hard if two people have different schedules. We gave it 4 days and returned it. This would be a great kitchen radio!

"Love the sound, but too complicated for a simple clock radio" 2009-09-25
By NoirOne (DC)
I love this FM/HD/Stereo clock radio, iPod player speaker system. The sound and the HD FM sound is one of the best considering its price point- approx $140. It rivals the Bose, in my opinion at more than half the price. You get very good separation in the stereo sound in a room the size of 12 x 12. I have never heard anything this good. I've looked at several and tested them in the store with my music on my iPhone. And if you have it sitting right in front of you, Wow!

As for the alarm clock part, it's not that easy to use, program and play. I like listening to radio in bed with the lights off. I find it difficult to find the right buttons to push in the dark. The remote is probably easier to feel the different buttons. To make change the radio stations, you really have to have memorized where everything is. You cannot navigate programming from the clock/radio itself without lights. Pre programed stations- yes it may work, but they are somewhere in the middle of the clock radio. Maybe I haven't had it long enough to remember. The clock is very bright and you will have to dime it a bit. That takes some effort

But the sound reproduction makes up for everything in my opinion. I would say that it stands alone just as an enhancer to the iPod. The HD radio in my metro area makes a difference from regular FM. Just by a cheap clock radio to wake up by.

"The Best HD Radio I have own (after my other Sony)" 2009-09-22
By C. Berrio (Hollywood, Florida United States)
This is my second Sony HD Radio that I own. The first one I got it for my house and this one (a year later) for my office. The look is amazing and the sound is magnificent for a small area. It work excellent with the Ipod. The control remote is very intuitive and can be fully controlled at the radio. Some people complained about the sound produced for the fan but in may case I do not hear it (I had to look the back to see it). The long extension cord with the transformer (some dubbed "Brick) can be hidden easily. Overall it is an excellent radio. I wish I could have more time in the day to listen to it.

"Works well, nice sound, ipod connectivity is seamless" 2009-09-13
By J. Merryman (New York, NY USA)
I bought this radio primarily to listen to HD-radio, which works great - it reliably pulls in the signals with no glitches or dropouts. The only thing to keep in mind (which I assume is a general design constraint of HD-radio) is that it takes a few seconds to start playing HD-radio. The ipod connectivity works well, and it's nice to be able to control the ipod via the radio buttons and remote.

 "Sony Products are Trash" 2009-10-07
By AJ (Cleveland, OH)
I thought this device was perfect for the bedroom, as my spouse and I both have iPhones. After one of the iPhone upgrades from Apple, the Sony stopped recognizing the iPhone; it wouldn't charge, it wouldn't play, nothing. After calling customer service, the guy told me that the device was only certified to work w/ first-generation iPhones (note that this was nowhere on the box or the manual), and that I would have to revert back to my old version of iPhone software to make it work! I looked in the manual, and where it lists all of the different generations of iPods this thing supposedly works with, it only said "works with iPhone". After sitting on hold for over two hours, I was told Sony would not send me a product that worked, or refund my money. DO NOT BUY!!!!

By Mark Guzzo (Chesapeake, VA United States)
This is a great clock radio and docking station. Quality sound for the price. I love the dual alarm. The only drawback is the display is quite bright at night if you are used to sleeping in a dark room. You can dim it, but the lowest setting wasn't low enough for us and we had to put something in front of the display to block the light.

"Affordable iPhone 3G docking solution" 2009-08-03
By Virginia Vol (Virginia, USA)
We have two of these and just purchased a third. They are the best inexpensive option for using your iPhone 3G/3Gs in a speaker dock. One of them we have bedside and use the alarm function - the other ones we don't.

The unit charges the 3G/3Gs with no incompatibilities or messages. I have also not experienced the GSM buzz that some said was present in the previous generation of this design (make sure you get the MK2).

The one nice thing I like about this is if you have a case on your phone, you can dock your iPhone easily and securely without removing the case. Most speaker/clock docks for the iPhone do not allow you to do that as the connector is too short or the case won't fit into the cutout. This one docks easily and it does so without placing any undue pressure on the phone connector, even with the case in place. There is a wheel in back which allows you to adjust the sliding pad which aligns the phone for docking. That way you can be sure the phone docks at the proper angle.

As for sound quality, it is average. This is not meant to be a large-room solution, so if you're after that look elsewhere. But for a small or medium room it's fine. We have used ours outdoors as well and it's OK. Not like the $250 speaker docks, but then you're paying 1/3 of the price as well.

The alarm functions work well, although setting and activating the alarm can be confusing at first. Yes, you can wake to the iPhone music. As for the brightness, it is a tad bright so if you like a darker display you can buy some cling-tint film at the hardware store to shade it a little. For me, it's fine and I have it 12 inches from my pillow.

In all, this is an excellent value, thus the reason for the five-star rating. it does what it says, is very compatible with the iPhone 3G/3Gs and sounds OK. I searched for comparable options that would allow me to keep my case on my phone and this was one of the only ones. The remote is handy, although frankly I rarely use it.

 "Griffin iTrip" 2009-10-02

I loved the original iTrip from Griffin, and thought I would love this one as well. It is a great product, and is extremely easy to use, however, unlike the original iTrip, you cannot access the clearest channel, which for me was 87.9. The new version only goes down to station 88.1. I did find one channel that plays very nicely, however, and the iTrip fits on my ipod touch perfectly, even with a plastic cover.

"Works fine, just not as smooth & sexy as Apple's Cord" 2009-10-10
By Tennessee Ken (Nashville, Tennessee)
I really didn't feel like paying what Apple asks for their iPod/iPhone cords, so I bought a couple of these. They work fine, but the end that goes into the iPod/iPhone is a little larger & klunkier than Apple's low profile plug. This means that if you're trying to plug it into an iPhone or iPod Touch that is wearing a case, it might not fit all the way through the opening at the bottom of the case, causing it to not "click" in and lock all the way. At least this has been my experience.

This product is worth buying! When I first plugged it into my Ipod Touch 2g it took maybe 40 seconds for it to show up in iTunes but other then that it charges normally and syncs properly. If you need a new sync cable because yours is tearing or it's is missing buy this! It's a "heavy duty" sync cable and it will not tear easily. Plus it was delivered to me over the weekend.
