"the sound is better than the cheap ones." 2010-04-08

By Coffee Lover (Los Angeles, CA)

for the price i paid for on amazon, it's cheap! the quality of the sound is so good that i threw away my cheap $20 headphones. it's very lightweight, fits securely on my ears, and only one cord hangs on the left side. there is no cord coming from the right side, so there is less cord interfering with your workout! Ear buds hurt my ears after 30 minutes of usage. these sennheiser ones doesn't hurt at all! one additional reason why i love these is that they have open sound too. Meaning, if you're jogging outside, you can also hear some outside noise which is good for safety reasons. but the outside noise doesn't overcome your music unless you jog in the downtown area.

 "Spendy but worth it!" 2010-04-08

By J. Perez (CA, USA)

Man i've been through 5 different styles. I still like my motorola s9, but sometimes they glitch. i think it's the bluetooth. it sounds like skipping but it's just choppy. These sennheisers fit similarly, snug and secure, give great range, and don't fall out. They're super light and i don't feel the cable at all.

 "A Workout Workhorse" 2010-04-07

By B. Joyce (Atlanta, GA USA)

I spent an entire afternoon sifting through reviews here on Amazon before settling for the PMX80. The reason? My Ipod came with the standard ear buds which sounded great, but kept falling out of my ears when I was using the treadmill or jogging. I needed ear phones that could take a good sweat, were sturdy, easily cleaned and comfortable while staying in my ears. I got all that and more with the PMX80.

The sound quality far exceeds that of the standard IPOD phones although I was able to get a tad more volume out of them. Not really a problem as they are plenty loud enough for my workouts. I guess the only thing I would do differently if I had designed them would be to have the wire coming out of the right side instead of the left, but again, no big deal, I just wear my Ipod holder on the left side instead of the right. All in all, this is a quality product that does what it was designed to do very well. I highly recommend it.

"So much for "sport" headphones" 2010-04-06

By D. Gavenda

I bought these to use running in lieu of PMX60's. But, after 30 mins, sweat will get into them and the audio will sound muffled. No complaints about anything else but I can't use these due to the sweat/muffled sound issue. I will go back to my PMX60's for running. There are no muffled sound issues w/ PMX60's.

 "Somewhat disappointing" 2010-04-05

By NirS (IL)

Having had the PMX70 and lost them, I naturally opted for the PMX80.

The sound is great as before, that's granted. Here comes the but...

BUT, these earphones have several disadvantages over the former model.

1. The bow is too tight. After wearing these phones for a while I get headaches because they press too hard into my ears, and I can't do anything to mitigate this problem.

2. The left earphone speaker unit falls out of the frame every once in a while and needs to be reassembled.

All in all, I'm sure Sennheiser could have done better with a sturdier assembly and consideration for people whose head is a little bit wider.

 "Not Right for Runners" 2009-10-16
By Running Ultra (Nevada)
I run about 45 miles per week average and have been searching for the perfect runner's earphones. These are definitely not them. The singular problem with these is that when you twist them and they fit snuggly in your ear, it only stays that way for about 5 minutes. Then, you must reach up and re-adjust the earphones, with a slight twist to get them back into your ear. If you wanted earphones that fit tightly and permanently in your ears during your run, these are miles away from being the right ones. They do sound good, yes. They are durable, yes...but they just do not stay in your ears for any prolonged period of time.

IMPORTANT: I have tested 10 different types of sets in the search for the PERFECT runner's earphones that always stay in your ears, that never need to be re-adjusted and that sound great. The search is over now. They are the Sennheiser PMX70 (they make a newer model, the PMX80). Look no further for the perfect long distance runner's earphones. Buy them, test them out and then come back and write me here about your experience with them. It cost me a lot of time and money to narrow it down to this one set of earphones (Sennheiser PMX70) - now you don't have to waste your own time and money and you can skip right to purchasing the long distance runner's dream earphone. If you purchase and test the Sennheiser PMX70, you will be simply amazed by how it is complete in all of the areas that runner's need/seek in their earphones. Good luck and happy running!

 "A great fit..." 2009-10-12
By Niaht
I just received my pair of these very functional headphones. I had been using the standard apple ear buds that came with my iPhone and during my walks I would end up batty from constantly having to push them back into my ears. I selected this set for obvious reasons, and I am happy to say that I am very pleased.

The sound quality is very good, but like any non-plug type ear buds you are not going to get eardrum shattering bass, or even the complete set of mid-range tones, without constant pressure. By testing and exchanging of the different adapters I was able to find a satisfactory quality, which delivers a solid range of sound, and will probably save me from too much hearing loss in the future.

I was not blessed with large ears like my father, however I am an adult male, and found that I still needed to up-size to the larger adapters all around. The ear buds were firmly fixed using the default set, but switching improved the audio quality by providing a tighter fit and somewhat more pressure on the ear bud. I also added the included soft covers which further helped improve audio quality, and provided a more comfortable experience overall. The key here is to experiment and find the right solution for your ears.

At first I was a bit perplexed by the longer right side wire, until I tried them on and quickly realized it should go around back of the neck. Once fitted and clipped, I almost forgot the wire was there. I have probably been living in the stone age as this was a first for me.

I am a bit concerned about construction/durability. The wire is soft and thin, which while aesthetically nice may break easily. The jack seems to be a bit ill-fitting, and generates significant static when moved. The rest of the components seem good.

The included case is made of soft durable rubber which I expect will last a long time. It is clipped with a low power magnet.

If you need an ear bud that will stay firmly and comfortably in your ear while exercising or even just walking, I think you too will find this a great fit.

"great set of workout headphones" 2009-09-12
By Edward Tapper
I've been looking for a set of good headphones that are durable. I've gone through 2 sets od Apple earbuds in a year. Don't know what it is, but the speakers sound like they fall apart in them. Anyway, I got these and used them for Jogging a few times and I have to say that they fit the bill perfectly. I'm surprised at all the negative reviews there are about how these headphones sound. They deliver great bass and sound fantastic (how much bass do you really need, anyway? strap a subwoofer to your head...). The only headphones that will deliver MORE bass are the in-ear sound cancelling earbuds, but those will have a better chance of falling out of your ears during workouts. These are significantly better than the stock iPod earbuds, no doubt about that.

I'm also suprised at all the negative comments regarding the unequal length wiring. People, read the instructions. Look up their website. It's all explained how to use these headphones.

The only grievance I can think of with these is that after about an hour of wear, I start to feel a bit of discomfort in my ears. But I don't wear these all day long so that isn't a big issue. I only use these for wrokouts.

"Great for running. Not so great for LONG term listening." 2009-09-08
By B. Jordan
I needed earbuds that would stay in my ears when I went running. These are perfect for that. The sound quality is good, not excellent. I tried all the different sizes provided, but the earphones still become uncomfortable after more than an hour of wearing (the part that "locks" the earpiece in your ear). Other than that, I love these for the purpose I purchased (running). I've got other headphones for longer, higher quality listening.

 "Neutral" 2009-08-16
By M. Miller (Tampa, FL USA)
Since I like to listen to music pretty loud while exercising, I agree with another reviewer who said that the sound quality diminishes noticeably above half-way. That's the biggest negative for these headphones--and for the price, it's a big negative.

Interesting design if you're used to canal-phones, or speakers that fit in your ear canal. Earphones which sit outside your ear canal, like those that come with iPods tend to fall out while jogging, esp. in Florida where sweat is an issue. These do stay in place and at least for me, they weren't uncomfortable.

I tend to go through headphones at the same pace as shoes (almost quarterly). I just went through a pair of Skull Candy canal-phones in two months. I purchased these because: the novel design to stay in the ear and because they have an the asymmetrical cord, which diminishes cord weight and thus the downward pull on most earphones, esp. while running where repetitive bouncing of the cord helps to pull earphones out.

So: if you like to listen to your music loud while exercising and sound quality is important to you, then you probably want to continue shopping. By the way, Skull Candy earphones had excellent sound quality at high volume--too bad they broke so easily. I'll use these earphones until they break or I get too frustrated with the poor sound quality and then continue on my quest for good, reliable, very durable headphones. Perhaps I'm asking for too much??

"Physically Active? These are for you!" 2009-10-13
By Anthony Hicks (Chicago, IL USA)
Let me start by saying that I have been on a very expensive quest this past year to locate in-ear headphones which met what I thought were fairly reasonable standards. After all every manufacturer out there has some sports figure on the packaging so how hard could it be right? I needed headphones which were durable, stayed put while: running, using the elliptical as well as laying flat while lifting weights and doing crunches. Finally and most importantly they needed to be highly sweat resistant. The headphones needed to meet these criteria while sounding phenomenal. If you are reading this you have probably been on the same quest and can't believe what a pain it is to find something that meets such obvious standards. Well I'm happy to report that you need not look any further!

These ear buds are the best I have ever owned and let me tell you I have tried several. I have a drawer full of failed headsets which all managed to die right outside the return policy. The warranties are useless since they will only replace them with what you already have which you know will only fail in a few weeks (if you are that lucky).

Sound:

The sound from these headsets is very rich. These headsets are capable of fooling your senses. I've had to pause music thinking there was external sound when it turns out it was simply sounds and instruments I didn't know was in the song because it was inaudible with previous headsets I've owned. It is literally like rediscovering your own music collection. The bass gives you the feeling of having a mini subwoofer in your head. Unless you have been to way too many Slayer concerts the volume these headsets can reach is simply stunning and will over power even the noisiest environments all with NO distortion. The Chicago subway is no match for them. Even without them playing they actually block sound because of the snug fit. If your cardio is heavily dependent on you being able to get into a zone and tune the rest of the world out while focusing strictly on the rhythm of your music then this is a huge plus. When you purchase these it is absolutely imperative that you spend just a couple of minutes selecting from the three bud sizes included. Without a proper fit you will be disappointed.

Durability:

They have been tugged, snagged in zippers, and I had to battle my cat for them at one point. Through it all they have managed to hold up. This is mainly because they didn't use plastic. Instead they used rubber. It makes a world of difference.

Staying put:

Simply put, they aren't going anywhere until you pull them out! I've run, used the elliptical, done weights, crunches, and through it all I was unable to shake them loose. Remember this is heavily dependent on selecting the correct size buds which are included in the package. The paperwork that comes with them tells you this but it doesn't tell you the other two factors that keep these in place. First, these headsets are designed so that the chord for the left ear bud is shorter than the right. These headphone are designed to go behind the head. Meaning you put the right ear-bud in from the back of your neck. Secondly, these headphones come with a clip. Attach the clip just an inch or two below the split for right and left ear. I usual clip to the collar of my shirt. These two things are just as important as finding a snug fit. If you don't run the headphone behind your head and place them in your ear, and if you don't clip it to your shirt, then the weight of the generous chord will pull them out once you get sweaty enough.

Sweat Resistance:

You are in the middle of your favorite work out jam. You are also about half way through the work out. Your heart rate is up, your breathing has synchronized, and you are totally focused. Then one of the ear buds starts sliding out so you grab it and push it back in trying to keep your pace. Then the music starts cutting out because you've inadvertently pushed a little sweat in when you reseated the bud. Now your music is in mono, you do what you can to try to revive the dead bud but its no use. You've got half a work out left and you know its going to be tedious because now its just you and the uncontrollable urge to stare at the timer. Sound familiar? I would say that perhaps 80% of my previous headphones have met their demise thanks to sweat. My cardio is very rigorous and when I'm done I'm usually drenched. These headphones have stood up to every soaking my brow can throw at them. As a testament to their resistance the instructions actually recommend running them under a light tap to clean them. Finally someone was listening!

These headphones have brought an abrupt end to my search and I hope this review has helped you do the same.

"Great for sweating/working out but why such a long cord ?" 2009-09-28
By David Stein (New York, NY)
I'm a runner and have burned through so many headphones its not even funny. V-MODA's and Skull Candy, while they sound great, are not made for working out. They short-out (ie. no sound) in either one, or both ears, after a short period of time (2 months? or even less).

These Senneheisers are top notch. They have yet to fizzle out, and sound great.

My only issue is the cord? Its uneven and way too long , unless of course, you're 6'6" tall?

Wish Sennheiser would shorten the cord and these would be perfect.

 "great earphones" 2009-09-18
By Rebecca (TX)
I got these earphones because I wanted a pair of good portable headphones that are also good for dancing/sport use. These are fabulous. The noise isolation is great-i finally understand the concept of "your mouth is moving but no sound is coming out." Works well in plane too. I also have to tune the volume down 'cause the earphones are really loud and it's so great. only reason I got it four stars is because I'm never comfortable w/ earplugs, and these kind of feels like them sometimes, but sometimes they are great and feel just great.

 "My Workout Phones" 2009-09-12
By B. Asari
Let me start by saying I am a confessed bass head; with that out of the way, I would like to say the bass on these are as good or better than most earphones around this price range, but I want more! Besides the bass being a little disappointing (for me at least) the sound was overall clear.

I use these ONLY when I workout and it does a good job isolating the sound. The wrap-around cable works OK by keeping it away from the front when I do upright exercises, but when I lie on the bench the cable behind my neck usually rubs between the bench and my neck and pulls the earphones out of my ear. I usually tuck excess cord into my armband so it doesn't get caught on my weights.

Pros

- Removable tips (comfortable)

- Isolates sound

- Sound quality is very good (even though I'd like more bass)

- Despite being yellow and me sweating all over it, it still looks clean!

Cons

- Like most in-ears there is some microphonics

- Wrap around cord isn't a perfect solution for staying out of your way while working out, still pops out sometimes

- Carrying case is junk compared to the ones that come with Ultimate Ears, Westone, etc. it uses a very small magnet to close and the rubber its made of attracts dust and hair, yuck!

Overall, I do not regret buying these; definitely a good choice for the gym, especially if you don't want to bring your $400 Westones to the gym!

 "very disappointing" 2009-10-20
By video novice (Lexington, KY USA)
Decent enough headphones, while they lasted. It took the better part of 6 months, but there is now no sound in the left channel, thanks to a problem where the wire meets the base of the jack. It is very frustrating to have to replace them already. They didn't stay in my ear all that well, either.

"You can find basically the same headset for $5 elsewhere on Amazon" 2009-10-18
By Nom de Guerre (Castro Valley, CA USA)
I purchased these and a pair that cost less than $5, both from Amazon. I can't really tell the difference, which makes these a massive rip-off. Both work as headsets with microphones for Blackberry Bold and iPod Touch. Go with the bargain version.

 "Indestructible" 2009-10-01
By Ray Stoecklin (New York, NY United States)
I'm outing myself: I'm a headphone abuser. The original Apple lasted a couple months until they fell apart, and the Skullcandy replacements broke after a week. But these - I've had them for a year and every day, I've been tossing them into my gym bag (with the shoes and all), and stuffing them into my trousers. Last week - which is why I felt compelled to post a review - I accidentally WASHED them on cold cycle and they still work!

These are isolating headphones. Once you get used to the "stethoscope" feeling of hearing your own breathing more, these headphones are great to listen to music at lower sound levels in noisy environments such as going to work on the subway. I also find them great for the office to tune out those coworkers who never learned to close their mouths while eating. Sound- wise, I find them fine after setting the iPhone EQ to "Bass Reducer".

This set is actually not the greatest to use for hands- free calling. For starters, the microphone seems to be a tad worse than the original Apple's, plus the isolation effect makes it a bit uncomfortable to talk - now I know how it must be to be hearing impaired, when you speak but can't hear your own voice. Still, it's nice to have a microphone to quickly take that call as well as for voice control with the new 3gs.

 "Another unhappy user" 2009-09-24
By ActivistScholar (Cambridge, MA)
I made my purchase based on user reviews, so I was hopeful.

However, the first drawback was that even with the smallest ear sleeve, these did not fit into my ear canal. Consequently, they never delivered the kind of sound quality promised and fell out of my ear with regularity. And I lost one of the ear sleeves the first day and had to purchase replacements (that were not the same as the original equipment) from Radio Shack. I thought, okay, I'll deal with the not really fitting in my ear dilemma.

While I like the way that the cord wraps behind the head, it really needs a clip because like others, I was constantly catching the cord on something. I finally used a small binder clip (or paperclip) to attach to my bra strap which helped. Still, this is a design flaw that could be easily remedied.

But I haven't even owned them for a month and the right speaker is out. So they are trash as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to try and get a partial refund or something, but assume this is just money down the drain.

If you have small ear canals (and I don't think mine are abnormal or anything), these are not a good choice. And, based on my experience, the production quality seems to be inconsistent as some users have no trouble and I'm one of the ones who did.

 "Great while it lasted" 2009-09-23
By Chris M. Schock (Parker, CO)
I had these for a little over 3 months before I can no longer get reliable sound from the left earbud. The bud itself is fine, the problem is the plug. Other headphones and buds in the same device work fine. It's very frustrating to know that the buds are perfectly intact, yet I cannot use these because a $1 plug doesn't make good contact. For this reason, I simply can't recommend them.

The pros are that they had pretty good sound quality, they did not sound tinny or screechy in my ear. Decent bass. The buds cut out sound very well, great for airplanes, cars or anywhere with a lot of ambient noise. The mic and button also worked pretty well - more reliably than the stock apple earbuds which seem to always require a spin or two in the jack before they work. Mic quality was at least as good as the stock apple earbuds, but I didn't buy them to talk.

The primary con is that they are built cheaply and did not last long. For starters, there is no strain relief where the cord meets the plug, so it's extremely easy to kink the cord. The wires leading to the buds themselves are also very thin, making them more prone to knots and tangles.

Other things that people may find annoying are that the mic and pushbutton are on the left side, opposite of the stock apple earbuds. Also, any rubbing or bumping of the cord transfers to your ear with loud booming noises - you aren't going to want to do anything vigorous while wearing these. Forget jogging. The cord to the left earbud is much shorter than the right, so any tension on the cord is only felt in one ear. Sennheiser tried making the mic and pushbutton more bullet shaped, but it still constantly catches on shirt collars, pockets, seatbelts, lanyards, etc. and creates loud noise in your left ear, pulls your earbud loose, or both. The pushbutton is the only useful component, the mic will probably not matter since most folks will not want to talk with these in (extreme vibrational feedback).

My suggestion is to get a cheaper pair of earbuds, particularly if you don't need the pushbutton on the cord.

What a pain!! They fit well which sometimes can be a problem for someone with my condition... Big Head!! 7 3/8 !!

I have purchased now several Sennheiser model of sport headphones. These are the best due to the very secure over the ear arrangement. The sound is good but not excellent I suspect due to making them "sweat and water resistant". Still the sound quality is very good and much better then the models that produce better sound as they actually stay attached to you ears!! I recommend them to friends and bought a pair for my wife.

"Stay in place during high impact training" 2009-09-12
By Matthew Arieta (Dallas, TX USA)
I've tried literally every kind of sports earphones there are, and these are the only ones that stay in place no matter what I do, be it martial arts, cross fit, jogging, gymnastics, etc. They're sweat resistant, lightweight, and Sennheiser is no slouch when it comes to audio quality. One small inconvenience is due to their awkward shape, they are not the easiest things to transport. If there is a "negative" worth noting it's when resting your head back on something like a chair, couch, or pillow the behind the neck bar can take a moment to position comfortably. Basically you simply push the bar down under the arch of your neck, and it's fine. Then again these are sports earphones, not couch potato headphones, so I use the word negative loosely. If you're doing sports, the bar "floats" behind your neck as it's intended to and there's no issues. Get these if you need light earphones that stay where they belong while you workout.
