I travel a lot and like to play music in my hotel room through my laptop but wanted to get something with more juice than the speakers built into my laptop. I was extremely disappointed when I first heard these speakers. They were so weak and distorted I switched back to my Laptops speakers after just a couple minutes of the weak, fuzzy distorted sound they made. They were clearly weaker than my laptops built-in speakers, which are not that great.



I recommend these only if your current laptop does not have its own speakers, otherwise it's basically the same or worse for playing music as standard built-in laptop speakers.

This is a well designed (except for on small thing - see below) little gadget/product/speaker. It works exactly as advertised. Not meant to be mini Bose speakers. They are just much better versions of laptop internal speakers that can be pointed in any direction rather than the ones in the laptop that are weak and lame and point straight up instead of at the listener usually. Just plug and play. I was looking for a pair of mini stand-alone speakers for a computer that I use for youtube and instructional video type stuff where I don't need great stereo audio but the internal speakers just aren't good enough. This is where these fit it. They take up no actual desk space and are much louder than the internals and quality is good too. I ordered another one and I wouldn't hesitate to give these as gifts. My one tiny con is that it doesn't have an on/off or volume control but they work off of the same controls as the internals so wtf.

I bought one of these b-flex speakers based to some degree on reviews I saw here on Amazon. I liked it so much I bought 2 more for my wife and son. One of the 3 had some static. With no hesitation whatsoever the company sent me a replacement at no cost. The replacement came today and it works like a charm . I cannot recall a company with a better attitude and more consideration for the customer. You should buy this and any other product they sell because Jlab most definitely backs up their truly exceptional products.

These speakers do a good job of boosting the volume and improve sound quality, but the sound quality is still not great. These speakers are okay if you need something totally portable to improve sound quality and boost the volume. If you want your laptop PC to double as a serious entertainment center, however, you still need to get some desk or tabletop speakers. Worth buying if you really need the portability and don't expect great things, otherwise just buy a set of desktop speakers.

 "Newly designed- won't slip" 2009-10-09

I haven't reviewed much (if anything) here before but after receiving this stand today, I figured it deserves a review. The previous version of this stand had slipping problems and Griffin has since started adding little plastic tabs designed to prevent the laptop from slipping off the stand. They work perfectly. I am actually using this stand for some DJ equipment that I needed raised up so i can still have the mouse on the right side of my desk. It works perfectly for that or anything else you might need raised off your workspace like a printer. Another plus is this stands portability. It is easy to pack up and take to gigs if I need to. It is also very stylish.

For a basic laptop stand, this one does the job beautifully.

Bear with me: I'm giving a 5 to the original plastic version, because I don't own this one and Amazon wouldn't let me post without a rating. But I have some observations that might help shed some light on the one-star folks' experiences.



I bought Griffin's plastic iCurve in 2001 for my iBook. It was fabulous, and later worked beautifully for my more recently purchased black MacBook. After *eight* years of heavy use, a fissure developed on one side and it finally broke. So I'm looking to replace it with the same product and see that Griffin has moved on to a metal version. Great! But reading about all the slippage issues gave me pause.



Now, after looking at the very helpful video review, I just wonder what's gone wrong at the company between the designers and the marketing/documentation people. As someone commented in response to one of the one-star reviews, the product as pictured appears to be *upside down*! In the original, the surfaces that held the computer didn't have rubber all the way down; rather there were two distinct tacky rubber "bumps" on each arm. (search Griffin iCurve to take a gander and you'll see what I mean) The physics were better than if there were one surface all the way down each arm, and the bumps also served to guide your positioning of your laptop.



Thanks to Christian's unboxing, we can see that the new 1093-CURV2 has two "bumps" of grippy stuff on one surface of each arm and a fully coated surface on the other. Given how the original worked, I truly suspect that the *two bumps should be on top* (which is what the commenter, who owns one, asserts), grabbing the underside of your laptop, while the fully covered sides we see face-up in the pic should be on the bottom, protecting tables and desks.



Is this an amazing product *support* fail on Griffin's part? Yes! Is it a bad product? I bet not. I feel sorry for the designers, because bad documentation and marketing are maligning their product and making customers very unhappy to boot. Hell yeah, you should be protective of your expensive notebook computers! But Griffin protected two of mine wonderfully for eight years, so I'm giving the designers the benefit of the doubt.



I'm going to get in touch with Griffin and follow up here with an update once I hear from them. So if you're at all conflicted, ask them directly about this before you dismiss the product, because I can tell you that the concept is just amazing, one Griffin has executed very well in the past. Keeps the computer cool, is great to look at (the original was far prettier, but I'll live), and helps you make excellent use of your desktop space.



**UPDATED 9/19/09** Here's a response from the Griffin folks themselves. I wrote to ask about the concerns and my theory about the misuse, and apparently, my theory was incorrect :)

There were a few isolated reports of laptops slipping while in use with the Elevator, but in those cases, we had folks send the elevator back to us and we were never able to reproduce it in our lab.



Just to be safe, though, we've added a couple of optional clips to the Elevator package, little clear stoppers that clip onto the end of the support arms, just in case the laptop starts to slide. I've used my Elevator with my MacBook Pro for over two years now, though, and have never had a single instance of slippage.

Just like everyone else, my laptop (unibody Macbook Pro) slips off the stand over the course of a few minutes to a few hours. To the point where I only have it on the stand when I'm sitting right next to it. Otherwise I take it off the stand and put it on the table.



Basically a waste of money, I wouldn't buy this again or encourage others to buy it either.

I've had this stand now for almost a month. It holds my MacBook Pro at a perfect angle for viewing, and the computer stays nice and cool. Since there has been several comments about laptops slipping down the supports on the Elevator, I simply placed 2 little velcro squares on the highest points of the elevator, and on the appropriate spots on the bottom of my MBP. There is no slippage and yet the laptop comes off the stand easily. Since the velcro is on the bottom of the laptop, no one ever sees it, even when it is not on the stand. I'm extremely happy with this product and with Amazon's service.

I use this with my 13" MacBook and a Targus Laptop Chill Mat, and having the Notebook elevated so that I don't have to look down really helps with my neck strain. An external monitor would be another possible solution, but this was less expensive and works better with my desk space. If you are looking for this type of product, I highly recommend it. It breaks down into 3 pieces for easy storage or travel, but is rock solid while in use. I have no complaints.

Good, Not Great, Sound.

I just got these for my new Dell Studio laptop. Sound quality is significantly better than the built-in speakers but still not up to home listening or audiophile standards. With a lot of bootleg recordings of varying quality, I found these speakers made unlistenable music listenable again, but still not great. Since I really needed something portable, I'm still satisfied but wouldn't recommend them as a home stereo option. For high-quality sound you'll still need powered desktop speakers. These speakers did really boost the volume though, which could come in handy for watching movies while traveling. Worth $40-$50 only because portability was the critical factor for me. Otherwise, you can probably get better sound from a pair of low-cost desktop speakers.

It helps to know what you're looking for. Perhaps I should say that I'm old, or at least old enough to remember the waning days of radio drama, listening to Sam Spade and Philip Marlow on a Zenith AM-FM. I still listen to those shows, but now it's from [...]. Back then, we were satisfied if we could make out the words. High Fidelity came later.



I have two Dells, one a full sized laptop, the other a Netbook, and while both are fine computers, neither was intended to be a portable entertainment center. The speakers are usually inaudible, which is just as well because when you can hear them, they're tinny. Combined with the poor quality of sound recordings from 50+ years ago, these laptops are worthless for listening to all most old radio shows.



The JLab speakers work precisely as claimed. They plug into a USB port, were instantly recognized, and produce an adequate sound -- loud enough so that I had to adjust the volume down towards the low end. There's no question but that the sound quality is poor, about what you might expect from a middle aged pocket radio, but the clarity and volume are excellent, and can be heard over the drone of a window air conditioner or a home treadmill.



These speakers are not suited for music buffs -- they lack the range and the volume -- but if the goal is get content, as in radio drama, news broadcasts, or other applications of that sort, the speakers work very well.



There's one other factor that shouldn't need mentioning, but somehow took me by surprise -- and I don't know why. Because the JLab speakers plug into a USB port, they're located on one side of the computer. Duh! That means that all the sound is coming from just one side. Somehow, that's okay when dealing with a telephone, or even a radio placed on one side of the room, but for some reason, when facing the computer, I seem to expect the found to come from a central source, and the lateral direction is strangely disconcerting.



The JLab speakers can't replace even a bottom line set of powered speakers -- not for volume, not for range -- and certainly not for music lovers But when the words matter and the music doesn't, these speakers are first rate.

At first I thought something this small wouldn't be able to perform how I wanted. After plugging it in, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. The sound that came from the tiny speaker was very solid. I turned the volume down to 20% and it was still louder/clearer than it would be at 100% through my laptop speakers alone.

Cons:

The usb flexwire could be a bit more sturdy (still not a problem if you rest the speaker on something)

Again, the usb connector can wiggle around a bit and pull out if you're not careful. (Maybe add a mini usb extension cord with the product)

I Purchased J-lab's b-flex Hi Fi USB speaker thru Amazon. I plugged it in to the USB port of my ASUS laptop, and immediately I lost power, and now my laptop is not working. It appears that I experienced the same problem another poster had with a Mac, which caused them to have the motherboard replaced! Hopefully, this does not happen to anyone else. Clearly, the instructions say nothing about potential compatibility issues with any laptop or computer.
