This unit offers a range of connectivity options, ranging from the ability to play compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA and AAC discs, to support for USB sources, iPods, HD Radio, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. For iPods, Pioneer has improved the user interface and menu navigation to more closely resemble that of the iPod itself, while adding some extra navigation features, including alphabetical search, iPod passenger control (which gives car passengers the ability to search for music on the connected iPod player itself), and Link Search, which provides a list of all the content by a currently playing artist.

"Decent try, but flawed execution" 2009-10-18
By D. Crain (NJ United States)
After living with this unit for the past month or so, I am scratching my head as to why Pioneer blundered what could have been an absolutely terrific unit. The 8000BT is not a failure by any stretch, but it simply has way too many flaws to be usable on a daily basis by a regular person.

Pros: Good reception, awesome built in Bluetooth that actually works great, plenty of inputs/sources, excellent XM integration, reasonably large display characters that can be read even in sunlight (for the most part)

Cons:

INSANELY complicated user interface with the multi function dial that makes it hard to know where you are while navigating the features.

Absolutely microscopic buttons and labels on the front panel to navigate settings, some of the most important functions are NOT backlit, so you simply cannot see them at night.

Presets are ridiculously difficult to navigate to. Radio or XM presets are just a massive hassle to get to and select while driving.

Sounds lousy (yes, you read that right), not sure why, but the factory head unit sounded better, clearer, more punch, and better highs... this unit sounds muddy, even when I upgraded to Pioneer speakers and amps. Even after fiddling with the Eq settings, crossover, Subwoofer, etc, I cannot coax a decent sound out of it.

Strange display characteristics... The song information scrolls all data about the song ONLY on CD, but NOT on XM/Sirius (so you have to push a zillion buttons to figure out what you're listening to!) I've tried lots of combinations in the setup menus to get this to work, but as the manual points out, scrolling ONLY works with CD. What were they thinking

USB source connection VERY flaky/picky about how the USB device is formatted and set up. If you sync your USB stick with Winamp or Windows Media player, it won't read it half the time (yes, you read that right)

All in all, an expensive mistake on my part. I find that living with this unit day to day is just awful. I am a gadget guy for the most part, and I usually like Pioneer products. This unit is totally ILL conceived... its clear it was designed from the outside in, rather than inside out. Instead of making the most of the double height real estate, they tried to make it pretty and sleek, while making it hard to use on a day to day basis. I suspect that a software update would help some of the dopey features/flaws be a bit more usable, but all in all, I'm totally disappointed.

"Incredible sound, USB functionality has limitations" 2009-10-08
By R. Koos (San Jose, CA United States)
Pros:

1. Incredible sound.

2. Incredible sound.

3. Did I mention incredible sound ?

4. USB hard drive functionality.

5. Phone bluetooth works well.

Cons:

1. USB hard drive size is limited to 250 GB, 500 directories and 15000 songs. Since it has the 500 dirs/15000 songs limitation you can typically use about 60 GB (out of 250 GB) depending on your songs length, etc.

I am giving this unit a 4 start rating because of these limitations and because of the figuring out process that you have to go through in order to get the most of the USB hard drive functionality.

Pioneer FH-P8000BT USB hard drive mini-HowTo

---------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to write a quick HowTo for the USB hard drive functionality so other people that want to use this feature don't have to spend 1-2 days like myself wondering how to get it working.

1. Use a USB hard drive that is mass media storage compliant.

2. Use FAT32Formatter (as specified by another review of this item). Partitioning and formatting this from linux (using fdisk, mkdosfs) will not work.

3. If you have more than 500 directories flatten them out since the unit won't read more than that. I wrote some scripts that do that automatically given a directory structure. Let me know if you need them and I'll post them here. They will only work with linux/unix.

4. You might have to buy an additional cigarette lighter to USB adapter in order to provide extra power to your hard drive. If your hard drive work by just connecting it to the USB cable of the FH-P8000BT you don't need this step. [...]

5. Enjoy !

"Simple, practical, no flare awesome receiver" 2009-10-07
By VICTOR MONTILLA
This is the second Pioneer car radio I have owned. I will not go wiht any other brand. The installation was abrease. I installed it on my 2004 Honda Pilot and had no problems. It fit like a glove. I was able to use the brackets that held the stock radio in place and with the additional harness I bought, all I had to do was match wire color to wire color. The sound its great even with the stock speakers. The controls take a little getting use to, but nothing dramatic. I had to purchase a trim kit to make it look more professional. All and all I am 99% satisfied with this product; the only gripes are that the controls could be more user friendly and that I lost the steering wheel mounted controls. I tremendously recommend this product.

 "No regrets (as yet)" 2009-10-04
By Casual Warrior
I purchase this basically for the iPod and Bluetooth features. I had it installed into my Hyundai Tucson (2009), no cutting of the dashboard was necessary.

I immediately connected my iPod and Blackberry devices and they both worked perfectly. I now have to go to the manual to fine tune the devices, that's the rough part. This unit has so many features I wonder if I will use or remember all. Don't try and figure it out on your own, you will get lost.

Don't purchase the iPod cable that's recommended, it comes with one and a USB cable. The manual is on CD so be prepared to do some printing.

The music is crisp and clear and that's with the vehicle's factory installed speakers. It plays my burnt CDs and MP3s. The reception with the phone is absoutly clear, I look forward to someone calling me. Now have to transfer the phone's phonebook to the unit.

I do not regret this purchase.

 "Very pleased" 2009-09-26
By Audiophile on a Budget (San Diego, CA)
This deck has everything I wanted. Installation wasn't too difficult and it comes with a shim to fill any potential gap you may have between the deck and the dashboard panel. It's a nice big double-din which makes it easy to use. I hate trying to find tiny buttons when I'm tryin to drive. The big round knob does take a bit of practice and learning to know how to use all the players functions but it's very easy to use once you have it figured out.

The sound quality is pretty good but I never compared it to any other decks so I'm just saying that subjectively. My favorite part of this deck is that it can use USB mass storage devices (most mp3 players/flash drives) to play MP3's and other formats which is a HUGE bonus. I can't begin to tell you how nice it is to stick ALL your music on a flash drive, plug it in and never have to switch a CD again. One minor flaw however is that it limits the bitrate it will play to 320kbps. Any file with a bitrate over 320kbps won't play. Mind you, that's pretty high but I have alot of music in FLAC (lossless, uncompressed format) and I was a bit bummed that I couldn't use the lossless WMA or iTunes files with this deck, they had to be compressed first =/

The bluetooth hands free works great now, although setting it up was a little tricky due to my LG phone not having thorough instructions. Basically, I had to turn off some bluetooth security option MANUALLY before telling the phone I wanted it to connect to the deck. I would have thought just telling the phone to connect would to the deck would work but apparently the LG engineers don't like to make things easy and it wasn't in the instructions with the phone. I also had some problems getting the phonebook to transfer all at once but I suspect its not the pioneer's fault but my cheap LG phone. I was able to transfer each phone book entry one at a time though. None of this stuff is a con against the Pioneer deck btw, but you might have similar problems with your phone and knowing the solution could save you some time.

 "Great Deck" 2009-10-11
By Kurt (Austin, TX)
Can't beat the price for what your getting. Installed in an 07 Xterra and it is sounds great, I was planning on replacing the factory speakers next but they sound so much better with this deck that I'm moving on to a new sub first. Touch screen is responsive and easy to use. DVD quality looks great and Ipod control is seamless as you can contol your music with either the deck or your Ipod. Handy side buttons for the most used controls(volume, skip, mute, and display off when driving while a DVD is playing so you don't to get caught...) Talked with a friend that is a Pioneer dealer and he can't even get it this cheap. Can't wait to hook up more stuff to it! Only con I've found so far is the boarder plate the hides the install hole does not fit the face tight and also had to trim the top off to get it to fit in my dash. Great deal and very happy with my purchase.

 "Great Receiver" 2009-09-02
By John F.
This receiver is priced great and looks amazing.

As far as functioning goes, most of it works pretty well. I use my iPod the most and the menu is easy to navigate as long as you use playlists. Searching for an artist/song with the alphabetical function takes forever if you have a lot of songs, and is hard to do while driving. It does give you an option of switching to just iPod control, but I tend to like using the touchscreen better.

The only bad things about the product are minor, but tend to be annoying to me. (which caused me to not give it five stars)

1) The 24 hour clock. I never realized how much I used my car clock until I got this receiver with the 24 hour clock that has absolutely no way of changing to 12 hour. It drives me crazy on a daily basis. I don't know what Pioneer was thinking shipping it out with it.

2) There should be a day and night feature for the brightness/dimmer/temperature setting. I find that during the day, it is perfect with the dimmer/brightness up all the way, but at night it is way too bright, so I have to adjust it every time. Pioneer should update with a feature that has the user determine when night is and when day is time wise.

3) The iPod function can be a little buggy at times, but only for short periods. (Connection issues)

4) Not being able to adjust the picture settings while driving. I know there is a workaround, but I personally have never felt the need to watch DVDs while driving, so I've never added it. Limiting the picture settings does not make sense because all functions can easily be adjusted while driving.

All in all, I definitely would recommend this product to anyone. It is reliable and functional which is what most people are looking for in a car stereo.

 "Well worth the $$$" 2009-09-28
By C. Eighmey
I got a great price on this unit and would highly reccomend it.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of a misunderstanding I had with it's ability to play DVD's. Maybe this was my fault for not reading close enough or asking questions, but I assumed that since it had video outputs that my kids would be able to watch a DVD on a seperate monitor without having to be in PARK. I understood that you couldn't watch the main screen while the vehicle was in motion, but what good does the drop down screen in the second row of my SUV do me if my kids can't watch their moveis while I drive? (yes, i know there is a way around the parking break)

Anyways, whatever the miscommunication, this unit does what it says very well and is an excellent value.

"May not fit your car...1995-2005 Crown Victoria." 2009-09-19
By Tom O. Ashwell (Minneapolis Minnesota USA)
If you have a Crown Victoria from 1995-2005 don't buy this radio because it CANNOT fit. There is no modification or fix.

I used the link on this page "Be Sure This Car Video Item Fits Your Car! Use the Car Electronics Fitfinder to be sure this item will fit your car." and it stated that this stereo WOULD fit in the dash of my 1998 Crown Victoria interceptor. (P71) Well, I wish I had seen this first: [...]which shows a full depth radio that works, (it is further down the pahe and gets shorter at the back to fit inside the cavity Ford left for the radio) but even then, beause the car electronics fitfinder said iti would fit I might have ordered it anyway. The ductwork inside the dash for the defogger gets in the way. There is no changeing it withtout taking a chainsaw to the dash and I am not doing that for any radio, no matter how cool it seems.

The moment the radio arrived, I had car trouble. Voltage was spiking dangerously high and I did dare drive it. Not even to the reapair shop. So I drove my other car, until the muffler fell off. That was a period of weeks. I thought I had time. Perhaps that is why there is no "Leave seller feedback" button on my review of the order on Amazon here. (Funny how it appears on the order that is just a little OLDER than this one.) I finally got the Crown Vic fixed at greater cost than this stereo, and I started to attempt to install this radio, by removeing the old one, and taking it apart for the connector to make an adapter for the existing harness. Then I see that the DEPTH of the radio is far too much at the full height of the radio to ever fit in the dash without sticking out about four inches. I did try to fit it in. No dice. So now as I drive to and from work, and on road trips, I have a gaping hole in my dash where my old, partially broken radio used to be, which reminds me of a very expensive boat anchor on my hobby workbench.

I cannot contact the seler, I cannnot return it and I cannot use it without buying another car - as if that is likely.

All I am saying is "buyer beware" and if you have a Crown Victoria from 1995-2005 don't buy this radio because it CANNOT fit. There is no modification or fix.

I think this will stop me from buying things on Amazon, if not entirely, for a good long time I should think. This is a lot fo money for something that you cannot use. I might have done better to have given the cash to a homeless person. In fact, I think I might double my loss and try that someday.

This works awesome in my 2009 Ford Ranger. Installation is straight forward enough. My car's dash required some dremmeling in order to fit the unit. Touchscreen is responsive. I agree with other reviews that the screen can be rather bright during night driving. However, for the price, this unit can not be beat. I added sirius adapter, sat. receiver, and bluetooth. Everything works great with the exception of the Bluetooth Adapter which has terrible sound quality.

I own a 2004 Ford F-150 Truck with all the bells and whistles. The only thing it didn't come with is a state of the art stereo system. The Pioneer AVH-P41100DVD has met all those needs. This upgrade has truly made my truck state of the art. From the music system to the in-car blue tooth, to the iPod connection, and DVD it has met it all my needs and expectations. I won't get into the sound quality because it is outstanding. I'm just impressed with all of the functions and their capabilities at a reasonable price!

By A. Brewer (Oklahoma, USA)
I have had this product for about a month now and I love it. I like how it has the option to be in a tilted position and how it slides down to put the CD/DVDs in because it gives you the bigger screen unlike some other models. Touch screen is VERY responsive. Haven't used the iPod features on it yet so no opinion there. Another great thing is you can load your own pictures on it for a 'custom' background. Also like how the buttons can change color, there is I believe 6 diffrernt colors, you can set it to one of the colors, have it constantly scan through them or create your own custom color with multiple different shades of each of the 6. Picture clarity on DVDs is also great. Price is great for everything you get and you still have the option to buy accessories like bluetooth adaptors for calls. Overall I really like this product, and I get alot of compliments on it. I would purchase again for another one of my vehicles and would recommend to others.

"Pretty Good - But What's the Deal with the Remote???" 2009-09-11
By W. Alexander (San Diego, CA)
I've read through many of the insightful reviews here (not all of them, so some of this may be repeat), and I'd like to add something that I haven't seen commented on yet.

Let me try and break this down into a few small areas of my deliberately limited focus for this review: Overall, Sound, and Control.

OVERALL

I think the unit is pretty good. I thought it was great at first, and love the DVD and video and all that (which is what I've wanted for SO long!), but as I've worked more with it, I'm noticing some very annoying issues (I'll explain below.) The installation was easy (easier than I thought), and the parking break thing didn't pose much of a problem to tweak. The unit looks nice, the screen is well designed, and the touch screen is very responsive (I love that!). One BRILLIANT addition to this unit is the display button on the left of the front of the unit. To turn the ENTIRE screen off and just make it black is just brilliant to me. I've had units where even the dimmer at night doesn't do enough to not distract me with the display while driving, or doesn't give me enough of an option to turn the brightness down to where I want it at times (if I'm parked somewhere just talking to a friend). To push a button and have the screen toggle off and on (keep in mind we're not talking about a 4 step menu option) is just great. One of the nice things about this unit. I love that. I too have a gap between my deck and the double-din area in my car (as one commenter noted), and can't seem to get the flat piece of plastic, that's supposed to go around the unit, to fit right. But overall I'm very happy with the look and functionality (in this sense) of the unit and am glad I got it.

SOUND

The sound is good, as I've always experienced with my Pioneer decks. Deep base, good mids and highs, and full output range (3 pre-outs, including a sub). What I don't really get is the EQ. Why? I have a 10 or 11 band on my old Pioneer deck and would LOVE to have that on this unit. I've been able to get this (really a 3-band) EQ to the sound I want, so I'm good for now. But I do wish this unit had a volume knob instead of buttons for volume up and down, but I've grown accustom to them now. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the sound.

CONTROL

Here is the crux of my complaint with this unit. Everything else (even the things I disagree with above) I can live with (even some of the complaints of others), but these below are almost deal-breakers for me (and if I'd have known about these things beforehand, I might not have bought this unit, but I couldn't find a display of it at any store anywhere!)

*First* is the listing of the artists and albums from my thumb drive. I have a 32 Gig drive (and I know it takes about a minute and a half to load, which sucks, and if you switch between sources you have to wait AGAIN, but I can live with that). The main problem I have is that the music seems to show up, NOT in alphabetical order, but in the order in which you PUT THE MUSIC ONTO THE DRIVE!!! Which is insane to me. Why does it index by create date (or whatever it does)??? Does any else's do this? It should have the artists, albums, folders, etc, sorted alphabetically (or at least give us the option of being able to choose our own sort criteria.) There doesn't seem to be any adjustment that I can make to address this. This is a serious issue for me and totally doesn't make sense. I can't stand the fact that it does this.

*SECOND* is the fact that I can't control ANYTHING with the remote (CD-R55), save some DVD options, or track forward and back, volume up and down, and pause. The remote operation for this unit is foolish. Without touching the screen I should be able to go forward and back on the screen with the remote between different folders, scroll up and down through artists, pick one, and click to play! Why do I have to do everything from the touch screen?? I should be able to select what I want from the remote. It just seems like they paired these two things up, but the remote doesn't do half of what it should. This too is a SERIOUS issue that I have. To me, it's far more distracting to try and scroll through and find the right folder and artist and album I want than any movie I have on. Not to mention that when you scroll down about 50 artists, select that artist, and then realize that you want someone else, when you go back, you don't go back to where you left off when you scrolled down to the 50th artist, but you're brought all the way back to the top to scroll through ALL of them again. Go back to where I was please!

*Third* (similar to the second) is that the remote doesn't control any of the audio functions either. On my old Pioneer, I could hit "Audio" and my audio menu would come up, enabling me to turn on/off, up/down my sub, change the Loudness, change any aspect of the EQ, or just change the preset to any one I wanted. I could change the fade, balance, etc. as well. You can do NOTHING of the sort with this one. Extremely frustrating for me, because I'm always tweaking the audio for different kinds of music. This is insane that it doesn't work like it should.

These are serious issues that, like I said, had I known, I might've looked into something else.

What can pioneer do to make this model better (in addition to the other things people have rightly pointed out)? Get a fully functional remote design to work with the unit, allowing both folders (artists, albums, songs, etc.) and audio to be accessible with the remote, get a 10 or 12 band EQ with each frequency independent from one another (accessible from the remote, obviously), and have the folders and artists from the USB be sorted alphabetically, rather than by create date (or, at least, if it's create date, put the most recently created ones AT THE TOP (instead of the bottom as it does now), since you'll likely be looking to listen to those new songs you just added.)

These to me are serious flaws that someone should've addressed before releasing this thing. I hope that a new model will have these issues addressed.

This is a great unit. Plenty of hook up versatility, screen doesn't wash out in bright sunlight, plenty of adjustment for sound etc thru head unit for minor changes after you've dialed in a seperate amp. Video quality is way better than expected. For the money, you can't go wrong
